The jury was out nearly three hours. Judge Costello thanked the jury for their attentive considera- ton of the case and discharged the prisoner without comment. The trial lasted a little over a day. Immediately after the dismissal the cause of James Down, brother of William, was taken up and a jury empannelled, He is charged with re­ ceiving the stolen cement sacks. All crown witnesses save one had been heard when adjournment wag taken until tomorrow morning at 9.30. A doctors certificate, was present­ ed to court testifying that the miss­ ing witness, an important one, was ill but it is expected he will be able to appear the next day, Wellington Tetreau of Grand Bend, the chief crown witness has already pleaded guilty to the theft of the cement sacks from an Ontario Government road contract on the Blue Water Highway early in the past summer. He implicated the Down brothers, stating that William Down’s truck was used to transport the alleged loot. The bags were I' found at James Down’s place, but Down floated knowing they were stolen, The total numbers of voters in the Federal riding of North Huron, as compiled from the lists in the hands of Alex Porterfield, chief enumera­ tor, is 17,252, The numbers in the various municipalities of the riding are as follows: Ashfield, 1'311; Blyth 444; Brussels, i554; Clinton, 11308; Colborne, 804; Goderich town, 2,800 Goderich Township, 991; Grey, 1,- 495; Howick, 2119; Morris, 1186; Turnberry, 995; Wawanosh East, 853; Wawanosh, West 9)5)9; Wing­ ham, 1383; total, 17252. HOPES HELD 'Strong hopes are held for the re­ covery of A, W. Grieves, Bell Tele­ phone cable splicer, critically injur­ ed in the level crossing'-accident jmst out of Goderich, in which Mr, J, E. Booth of Windsor, lost his life. Grieves, who suffered injuries to his chest and head, had been given a fifty-fifty chance to recover all week, but yesterday his condition showed 'a decided improvement, He does not however, remember any­ thing of the accident, his first ques­ tion on regaining consciousness be­ ing “what hit us.” MISCELLANEOUS SHOWER A very pleasant evening was spent at the home of Mrs. Sol. Jocabi when a miscellaneous shower was held in honor of her eldest daughter Miss Susie Jacobi, iA> lovely array of gifts were received. CELEBRATED BIRTHDAY Hon, J, G. Gardiner, Premier of Saskatchewan, celebrated his ■ 5.1st birthday on November 130th. A large bouquet of mums adorned his desk in the Legislative Chambers at Re­ gina and he was afterwards present­ ed by his colleagues with a beautiful travelling portmanteau. James McGinley on Wednesday, when Trellis Eliza­ beth, daughter of-Mr. and Mrs. Fred Gratton, Grand Bond, became the bride of Lawrence Taylor, son. of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Taylor, also of Grand Bend, Mr. McGinley officated, The bride was charming in a long fitted gown of royal blue silk crepe, with blue hat and accessories to match and carried a bouquet of Tal­ isman roses. The bride and groom were unattended, After a motor trip they will reside at Grand Bend,
