Three boys plunged through the ice on the Nith river, New Ham burg on Monday and were drowned in seven feet of water. A fourth was rescued by the father of on© oi the victims, who was unaware that his own son had been swept under the ice. Those drowned were Fred Eng lish, aged 8; Garfield English, aged ]0 and Henry Goertz, aged 10. The English brothers were the only children of Mr. and Mrs. Raymond English, former residents of Cred iton. boys John their The accident occurred as Gar field English was skating along the river, dragging a sleigh on which the young brother was seated. Young Goertz was running beside the sleigh, and Penner was skating nearby. They reached a stretch ot thinner ice, and crashed through. Filthcr Working on Bank Goertz, Sen., was cutting wood on the bank, when he heard the ice break. He ran to the scene and found William Penner, aged 20' and the smaller English boy floundering in the water. He saw no sign the other two boys. With a hockey stick left lying on the ice, he pulled Pennei’ safety and when he turned, Garfield English had disappeared. Pennei told him his own son had drowned The alarm spread quickly, and the town fire bell brought out the volunteer fire department with grappling irons and hooks. The men broke a long channel through the ice and launched two heavy scows, from which they worked for more than an hour before they found the first body, that of Gar field English.
