Dinney, Postmistress at Millet, Alta., since the death of her husband in May, 1923, passed away while on. a visit to her daught­ er, Mrs. Stuart McGibbons, at Hugh- enden, on July 27th. Mrs. Dinney, with her late husband and family, settled in the Millet district in.1911. The late John Dinney was a brother of Mr. Thos. Dinney of town. She leaves to mourn her loss/ive daughters, Mrs. Flora Young, Ed­ monton; Mrs. Rosella Kembry, Pon- oka; Mrs. Kieth Sexsmith, Mrs. Edith Michael, Toronto and Mrs. Ruby McGibbon, Hughenden and two sons, Herbert, of Millett and Hollis, of Edmonton; a sister, (Mrs. F'ans- tone, of Millet, and a brother bur, of Auburn. A. >Mr. and Mrs. John Pedlar receiv­ ed the sad news of the death of Mr. Richard Arscott, of Killarney, Man., a former resident of Exeter* Mr. and Mrs* Arscott visited with Mr. and Mrs. Fedlai’ and the Coates fam­ ily about a year ago. Mr. Arscott was in the act of going down the stairs at his home when he missed his footing at the top and fell to the bottom, He injured his back and lost the use of his legs ’and arms. The shock was too great and he passed away two days later. COMPETE AT EMPIRE GAMES Exeter will be represented at the' Empire. Games that are being held in Hamilton this week* Mr. W. E. Quinn will compete in the one mile interseholastie event on Friday, He was a close second in the mile run at the WOSSO meet in London in May w.hich qualified him to compete in the Empire games and be has had considerable training since that time. He has also entered for the 12-mile marathon to be run at the-Toronto Exhibition. Robert Stoddart, of ^Goderich, Dominion (champion for interscholastic pole vault, will also be a campetitor. FIRE SUBDUED AFTER GAINING CONSIDERABLE HEADWAY Owing to the prompt action of the Exeter firemen on Tuesday afternoon a fire which had gained considerable headway and which threatened to de­ stroy a barn on the property of Mr, Silas Johns on Albert St., was quick­ ly brought under control. ‘The barn is situated at the rear of the residence which is occupied by Mrs, Charles Pilon. When the firemen arrived the b,arn was a mass of flames which threatened to set fire to the house as the wind carried the flames in that direction. With heroic effort the flames were soon subdued leav­ ing the building badly charred. Some Children had been playing with fire in the barn and the alarm w,as turn­ ed in by Charlie Complin, STOLEN LOOT RECOVERED Two men were arrested ip London last' week in connection with some of- the thieving operations that have been going on in this district. Some of the stolen loot was located in an old building at Clundeboye and con­ tained about $500 in merchandise of all varieties, including, clothing which had .been,, stoleii fronx ,a, dry-:. cleaners in London, ’quantities of cigarettes, cigars, matches, chocolate­ bars and other small articles appar­ ently stolen from refreshment booths and service stations. Some of the stolen goods were midentified as be­ longing to Mr. J.' G., Cochrane, of town, as his name appeared on some of the boxes. Mr. and Mrs. Coch­ rane were in London, and recovered most of the stolen goods from them. It is also believed that the goods stolen from -the refreshment booth of Mrs. Saundercock, of Hensail, was among the lot although it could not be identified. Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Bagshaw receiv­ ed word Monday that their daughter, Mrs. Samuel Sample, of St. Cather­ ines, had passe daway following an illness of several months. The de­ ceased had .been a resident of St. Catherines for the past fifteen years where Iter bereaved husband was a principal in one of the schools. Be­ sides her husband she is survived by two’ sons, Milton add Percy’ Fleck* Her maiden name was Sarah Ahn Bagshaw. Besides those already mentioned three brothers, and three sisters survive: James and George Bagshaw, of Bursay, .Sask.; Mrs* D.‘ Christie, of Srathcona, Alta.; Mrs. Elston, of Sit. Marys; Mrs. Fred Ho­ garth and Mr. Homer Bagshaw, of this community. Homer and his mother and Mrs. Fred Hogafth at­ tended the funeral on Wednesday. Mr. Wm. Bagshaw Will celebrate his 93rd birthday on Monday next and on the 4tH of July Mr. and (Mrs. Bag­ shaw celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary. Mr. Rd. While passing the Times building they saw a man fall from the roof to the ground below being instantly killed, The deceas­ ed was J. G. N* SR. express agent in Exeter. motored and Mr. of Lon- REMAINS OF GERALD FITTON ARE LAID TO REST The remains of the late Gerald Fitton, aeroplane pilot, who met an untimely death in Lake Ontario, when he attempted to swim ashore to bring aid to his companion af­ ter their machine had made a forc­ ed landing, were- brought to the home of his parents, Mr, and Mrs. Saxon Fitton, and the funeral was held Friday afternoon of last week. The local branch of the Canadian Legion attended in' .'a. body. The service was conducted by Rev. D. McTavish, who spoke of -the heroism of the young aviator who refrained from landing near the shore because of the bathers who lined the beach and who on finding that the aero­ plane would not support' him and his. companion struck tout for shore,' about a mile distant. Mem­ bers of the James St. United choir assisted With the singing and a„ so­ lo was sung by Mr. W. R. Goulding. The casket was adorned with, a beautiful array of floral tributes and a large number of persons were present to pay their last tribute of respect. Six airmen from Toronto acted as pallbearers, at the home and six ex-service men from the Le­ gion acted in the same capacity at the grave. The aviators were I-Iy. Honey, Edward Broadrlbb, Thomas Butson, Edgar Rundle, William Matthews and Roy Drew and the re­ turned men were Elmore Harness, G. Appleton, W. Wells, A. Davis, W. Harness and W. C* Davis. The “Last Dost" was sounded at the grave by Mr« Geo. M> Graflt. Among those from a distance who were present at the funeral were Mrs* Fitton, of Toronto, widow of the deceased; Mr. and Mrs. E. Wil­ liams, of Kingston; Mr, John Drew, Mr. Chas, Drew, Mr. and Mrs. Mat­ thews, of Toronto; Mrs. McCoy, Mrs. McNeviil, Mr. and Mrs. S.
