FIRE SUBDUED AFTER GAINING
CONSIDERABLE HEADWAY
Owing to the prompt action of the
Exeter firemen on Tuesday afternoon
a fire which had gained considerable
headway and which threatened to de
stroy a barn on the property of Mr,
Silas Johns on Albert St., was quick
ly brought under control. ‘The barn
is situated at the rear of the residence
which is occupied by Mrs, Charles
Pilon. When the firemen arrived
the b,arn was a mass of flames which
threatened to set fire to the house
as the wind carried the flames in
that direction. With heroic effort
the flames were soon subdued leav
ing the building badly charred. Some

STOLEN LOOT RECOVERED
Two men were arrested ip London
last' week in connection with some
of- the thieving operations that have
been going on in this district. Some
of the stolen loot was located in an
old building at Clundeboye and con
tained about $500 in merchandise of
all varieties, including, clothing
which had .been,, stoleii fronx ,a, dry-:.
cleaners in London, ’quantities of
cigarettes, cigars, matches, chocolate
bars and other small articles appar
ently stolen from refreshment booths
and service stations. Some of the
stolen goods were midentified as be
longing to Mr. J.' G., Cochrane, of
town, as his name appeared on some
of the boxes. Mr. and Mrs. Coch
rane were in London, and recovered
most of the stolen goods from them.
It is also believed that the goods
