EXETER COUNCIL Tax Rate Set at 44 WJI$ Monday, September 23, 1929 A regular meeting of the Municip- al Council was held in the Town Hall with all members present, The minutes .of the meeting held on Sep- tember 9th were read and signed by the Reeve. Letters were read as follows: �A written :request from Miss Ag- nes Campbell for a walk in front of her home and a crossing to reach to the East side of the street, Referr- ed to commission. A circular letter from the Deputy Fire Marshall of Ontario, Mr. (3•, F. Lewis, giving notice of a Royal Pro, ciamation Oct. 6.th to 12th as Fire Prevention Week. Hoping to have the support of all citizens in clean- ing and keeping .clean :their bomes and store surroundings, all rubbish and litter that make for fire hazards. Mr. James Pettit of the Erie Gas Co. asked for the council to re -build the want so as to support truck traffic in front of their new station on. corner of Main and North Sts, The council agreed to provide a 12 inch drive way on both streets and gave the company permission to make further extensions and repairs as required by ,thein. ,Motion of Francis and Rivers. Eng•letsotn, of A NARROW ESCAPE Mr. Crescent Dayman, driver for the Bagshaw Transport, had a close call on Friday afternoon last when a front tire blew out and the truck took to the ditch. The truck came to a stop just a foot or two from the brow of about a forty foot drop. Mr. Dayman in company with Eric Campbell. were making deliveries on Friday and when about three miles from Ripley one of the large tires blew out and the truck left the road. It struck a telephone pole breaking it off; went through a fenee and was stopped on the brow of a hill by a tree. Fortunately no one was hurt. The left front fen- der of the truck was damaged and a spring support was broken. The telephone pole was lying across the top of -,the truck and had demolish- ed the glass sign. There were be- tween three and four tons of groc- eries on the truck at the time and had it not been for the quick action of Mr. Dayman and the tree being in the way the truck tnndoubtedly Would have gone over the hill with disastrous results. The report when the tire blew. out Was heard. for al- most a mile. Another truck was sent out to Make, the delivery and the ,damaged, truck was towed hone. CAVEN S. S. Mr. Brock was engaged. in plowing out a ditch driving a horse when a tug broke and. the singletree flew back striking him in the leg re- suiting in a bad fracture. Dr, Flet- cher was called and .on Friday Mr.. Brock was taken to London for an X-ray and will be there for a couple of weeks. Mr. and /burs. Thos. Brock accompanied Mr. Brock to. Hind, a recent grad- uate of the Toronto Dental College, is leaving Friday for Walkerton to' take over the practice of Dr. Halli- day. Dr. Hind is one of Exeter's popular young men.
