SEASON'S GREETINGS
Dell folks will be spending Christmas in much the same way
as all families in Clinton and area. They'll be enjoying
turkey dinners and plum
puddings, singing carols,

coloured presents and all
the other exciting activi-
ties that go with this
joyous time of the year.
There will also be time to
relax and enjoy the comp-
any of friends and relatives

will be on the job during
some part of Christmas
keeping our vital services
open. Even though you and
I can take a holiday, tele-
phone service must go on.

where which adds a special your calls go through. quality to this one day in
the year. And, incidentally, Christmas is one of our busiest
days. We handle a tremendous number of calls . . calls
tq neighbours, calls to distant cities on this continent and,
on occasion, calls to other parts of the world. But the?nice
thing about the great majority of these calls is that they
carry greetings of joy and good wishes. Perhaps this is why
telephone people get so much enjoyment out of the role they
play at Christmas. On behalf of all of us here at the Bell,
1 would like to take this opportunity to wish you a very
merry Christmas and the best in health and happiness for
the coming year,
A special Christmas treat is in store for all our custom-
ers on December 22 in, the form of an hour-long program of
popular and tractional music of Christmas over CDC-TV
starting at 9.30 a.m., and sponsored in Canada by the
Trans-Canada Telephone System. Entitled "A Trip to
Christmas," the show will have the popular Jane Wyatt,
star of "Father Knows Best," 'as hostess and will feature
such stars as John. Raitt, Jane Morgan, the Lennon Sisters,
Lisa Della Casa, Violette Verdy, Edward Villena and the
Schola Can:thrum. It's a show the whole family will enjoy.
Don't miss it.
Remember, now you can get double value on station-to-
station long distance calls of 10 minutes or more within
Ontario and Quebec placed after 9 p.m. any evening under
our new "Night-Economy Plan."

Council on. Monday at the
last regular meeting of 1961
authorized a $35 contribution
toward the annual Christmas
treat for children being plan-
ned by the Legion, A. work
party to bag candy is being
held tonight at the Legion Hall.
Clinton Council suPPorted a
resolutlian from Hamilton city
asking that the Province of
Ontario take steps to have
established a select committee
to investigate the rights of ped-
estrians at crosswalks.
Council adopted the 1961 as-
sessment roll totalling $2,511,-
295.91 made up of: land, $184,-
985i buildings, $2,093,564.85 and
business, $232,746.06.
Mayor Miller gave the police
committee report noting 39
trailers in use at the trailer
park and four empty; four sum-
monses issued; 25 investigations
carried out; $100 in fines im-
posed; two highway escorts;
five warnings under the High-
way Traffic Act; two places
found insecure; two motor
vehicle accidents; 11 prosecu-
tions under the Highway Traf-
fic Aot and 11 convictions; one
prosecution under the Liquor
Control Act and one conviction.
Among expenses was an item
for a broken spring on the
cruiser which Mayor Miller re-
ported had happened on Matilda
Street.
Councillor Donald Symons,
head of the protection to per-
sons and property committee,
noted that he did not believe
the town was getting good value
from the "old relies'
,
of street-
lights the PUC was installing
in areas off main street. He
called for a survey to be taken
to distribute lighting more
evenly.
Mr. Symons reported requests
for streetlights at the entrance
to Alma Grove; to the area of
the street near the Lions Arena;
to the part of Maple Street in
front of the liquor store; to a
section of 'Townsend between
Kirk and East Streets.
Another request was before
council, signed by Jack Irwin,
Carl Powell, Mrs. Vic Finnie,
Mrs. Joe Wild, H. G. Manning,
R. J. Dixon and two others who
are not ratepayers, for lights at
the north end of Albert Street
and the Base Line Road.
Councillor George Rumball
for the public works depart-
ment reported a deficit of
$5,000. Reporting for sanitation
and waste removal Mr. Rumball
commented briefly that a drain
had been disrupted at the corn-
er of Church (it is presumed
he meant Beech) and White-
head Streets, but that it was
not yet determined who was re-
sponsible.
Building permits were auth-
orized for a motel, being con-
structed by William Fleischau-
er at the northwest edge of
town on Highway 8, east side
of Huron Street, for $100,000.
Permit also was authorized for
a $10,000 home on the south end
Of Townsend Street (back of
ROM Transport Ltd,) for N,
Wright,
After Deputy Reeve Morgan
Agnew read these he said
"And we want it Clearly under-
stood that this is the last per-
mit to be Issued!"
Someone asked, "in that
location, You mean?" "Yes,"
said the deputy reeve.
Council approved a motion
calling for payment of $35.02,
for pictures of the OBA cham-
pion juvenile baseball team
presented to the team at the
banquet in their honour.
Boxing Day, December 26,
was declared a civic holiday and
Mayor W. J, Miller was author-
ized to declare it as such.
Reeve Melvin Crich demand-
ed to know where the chain
saw was, "I want to know,"
Councillor Rumball rose with
some impatience saying, "I be-
lieve Mr. Crich has been fool-
ing around with this long
enough, 'tell him where the
chainsaw is. It's at Johnnie
McFarlane's and it's going to
stay there until I'm relieved
of the job of streets committee
chairman. It's in just as good
shape now as when it went
clown there."
(Note: John McFarlane is
foreman of ptiblic Works.)
A motion was passed to
authorize the clerk to pay the
councillors. Remuneration in
1961 for council meetings and
meetings of committee of the
whole is $8.50 for councillors
and $12.00 for the mayor. This
year a closed committee meet-
ing of the whole has been held
one week previous to each reg-
ular public meeting.
