COIN
...NOTES..
(By JACK C. DIETRICH)
Two bits, a quarter dollar,
call it what you will, in Canada
its only correct name is 25
cents. It is a silver coin, abun-
dant in circulation and, sur-
prisingly interesting to study
and collect.
The handsome caribou pieces,
struck through the reigns of
King George V1 and that of
the present Queen, make an
attractive set in themselves,
with no really scarce dates.
Earlier issues with wreath and
inscription, also are appealing
coins, but really good speci-
mens are becoming hard to
find,
Nevertheless, the basic size
and purity of the coin 'is un-
changed since the first strik-
ings of 1870, arid there is no
reason why the occasional old-
er piece should not turn up in
Canadian change.
Earlier strikings, the Victor-
ies and Edwards, are fine piec-
es, but gaps in the Victorian
series stand out. With 66,340
struck of the 1889 it is looked
upon as decidedly scarce, the
1875 proves rare although the
Mint reports a million struck
for that year. Since no coins
were minted in 1876 through
1879, one wonders if many of
the 1875's were melted as sur-
plus, but such assumptions are
hard to justify at this late
date.
The entire series of Cana
dian 25 cent pieces is interest-
ing, and fairly accessible. Col-
lecting it, or part of it, could
