joyed, A penny sale was con-
ducted by Mrs. Durnin and
'Mrs. Vincent, after which a
lovely lunch was served by the

A number of the Landes -
bora WMS attended the Au-
burn WMS thankoffering last
week and enjoyed a splendid
evening. Rev. and Mrs. C. G.
Park, Clinton, showed interest-
ing slides on .a trip to Ber-
muda and Trinidad last year.
A social time was spent at the
close and a dainty lunch was
provided by the Auburn ladies.

tertained 12 friende and neigh-

to a noon luncheon recently.
Following the luncheon Mrs.
Robison spoke a few words ex-
pressing regret that Mrs. Hem-
bly will be moving to Dublin,
and presented her with gifts
from the friends. Mrs. Hem-
bly thanked her friends and a
social time was enjoyed,
Organist Honoured
Miss Margo Grange was re-
cently honoured with a sur-
prise party at the home of Mr.
and Mrs. Elliott Lapp by the
choir of Knox United Church.
Miss Grange has been organist
for the past three years and
is now •a student at Stratford
Teachers College. Music and
contests made an enjoyable
evening. Mr. Lapp gave a short
address thanking Miss Grange
for her work as organist and
choir leader, and wished her
every success in her new ven-
ture, and presented her with a
gift from the choir. Lunch was
served by the hostess assisted
by Mrs. Oliver Anderson and
Mrs. Norman Wightman.
Floral Arrangements
Flower lovers in Auburn and
the surrounding district have a
treat in store on Monday even-
ing, October 16, when W. Den-
omme, Goderich, will give a
demonstration of the arrang-
ing of flowers at the October
meeting of the Auburn Horti-
cultural Society. This meet-
ing will be held at 8.30 p.m. in
the Orange Hall and there will
also be a musical program.
More Telephone Calls
Dial telephones have proved
very popular in the Auburn
district since the Auburn ex-
change was ,changed over on
March 15. The 175 subscribers
on this exchange have made a
total of 154,648 calls during
the six-month period from
March to September 15. There
has been 99,941 local calls
made, 32,300 incoming calls' and
32,443 out -going calls. This is
an average of 5.05 calls per
phone each day. No compara-
tive figures are available but
the Blyth commissioners be-
lieve that this is a tremendous
increase in calls since the ch-
ange to dial phones.
Sigma C Boys Club
The first meeting of the
USigma -C Boys Club of Knox
nited Church was held recent-

for the first meeting at which
a film was shown, games were
played, plans were discussed, a
worship service held and lunch
served.
John Wright is in charge of
the athletic program. Keith
Arthur and Rev. Charles Lew -
are in charge of the rest of the
work, This group will meet
every Thursday evening, 7 to
8.30, in the Sunday school
room of the church.

The enthusiasm of the group
runs high and the attendance
is expected to expand in the
next few weeks. Visitors will
be welcome to observe this
group in action in the new year
when activity is at the peak.
CGIT Meets
The first meeting of the Au-
burn CGIT was held in the
Sunday school room of Knox
reebeterian Church. The lead-
er, Mrs. W. Bradnock led the
meeting and Margaret Sander-
son presided at the piano. The
scripture lesson was read by
Judith Arthur and the offering
was received by Diane Kirk-
connell.
Mrs. Dunean Mackay, the .as-
sistant leader, read the story
about children in other lands
starting their fall school term.
A quaretette, Gail Miller, Mar-
ian Youngblut, Diane Kirkcon-
neIl and Mary Sanderson sang
a number.

United Thankoffering
The autumn thankoffering of
Knox United Church Woman's
Missionary Society convened in
the Sabbath school room of the
church with a large attend-
ance, The Londesboro ladies
were guests, also Woman's As-
sociation groups and many
from the congregation. Quiet
music was played by Mrs. Wil-
liam J. Craig. The call to wor-
ship led by Mrs. William T.
Robison was on the theme,
"The Harvesting of the Years
and a Litany of Thanksgiving
for the sowing of the seed."
This last •thankoffering ser-
vice of the WMS as a separ-
ate organization arouses many
blessed memories. It is exact-
ly 36 years to the month since
the Uniting Missionary Soc-
ieties of the Congregational,
Methodist and Presbyterian
Churches brought together
their harvesting of service in
the National Inaugural service
en October 26, 1925.
The responsive reading from
the hymnary, No. 129, verses
123, was led by Mrs. John
Durnin and the scripture les-
son from John 17: 1-22 was
given by Mrs. Elliott Lapp,
and the meditation, "The Har-
vesting of the Seed" by Mrs.
Ernest Durnin. A solo was
sung by Mrs, Charles Lewis,
Charles Scott introduced the
guest speakers .of the evening,
Rev. :and Mrs. C. G. Park, of
Wesley -Willis United Church,
Clinton. Mr. Park addressed
the meeting and explained the
pictures of Trinidad shown by
Mrs, Park, The slides proved
most informative and interest-
ing and were greatly enjoyed
by all present, Mrs, C, Lewis
in a few
well chosen words,
thanked Mr. and Mrs. Park,
The thankoffering was reeeiv-

Wilfrid Raymond Huffman,
43, RR 1, Hensall, was admit-
ted to Sarnia General Hospital
last week when he fell out of
a car on Highway 21 five miles
north of Forest. He suffered
head. and possible internal in-
juries, Mr, Huffman was hitch-
hiking to Hensall from Sarnia
when picked up by a car dr-
iven by Benjamin Gressette of
Kettle Point Indian Reserve,
J. F. W, Paterson, Toronto,
visited last week with his neice
Miss Cassie Dougall, and other
relatives, Mr. Paterson who
will celebrate his 89th birth-
day in December is very smart
and active and alert for his
years, and has fully recovered
from a fractured hip he suffer-
ed in a fall last winter. He
enjoyed reminiscing with old
friends. in the village.
Auxiliary 12 Years Old
Hensall Legion Auxiliary
observed their 12th anniversary
on Fridley, October 6 and ent-
ertained Legion members. The
Legion Hall was very attractive
with baskets of bronze 'mums.
Progressive euchre was played
and the winners were ladies,
Mrs. Mary Taylor and Mrs.
Harry Horton; gentlemen, Ted
Taylor and Wilmer Dalrymple.
In a draw for a leather hand
bag Mrs. William Smale, Hen-
sall, was the winner. .A leath-
er wallet was won by Earl
Zimmer, Zurich. Jim Young
and his orchestra from Exeter
provided music for the dance
and a turkey and ham smor-
gasbord was served.
Evening Auxiliary
"Thanksgiving" was the th-
eme used for the October meet-
ing of the Evening Auxiliary
of the United Church held Mon-
de yevening. Mrs. Walter Sp-
encer chaired the meeting, and
Mrs, P. L. McNaughton was in
charge of the devotional. Mrs.
Pearl Passmore read scripture
passages and Mrs. McNaughton
offered prayer. The group ac-
cepted an invitation to join
the Arnold Circle at their meet-
ing Monday evening, October
16.
Mrs. Spencer submitted the
visiting report. In November
the group will entertain the
WMS and Arnold Circle of Car-
mel Church, Chiselhurst and
Kipper Societies, and their own
WMS. Hostesses will be Mrs.
Jack Drysdale, and Mrs. How-
ard Scene. There will be a sp-
ecial guest speaker.
Plans were finalized for the
bazaar, bake sale and tea. Mrs.
R. Boyce spoke on the School
for leaders at Alma College
which she attended. She was
{thanked by Mrs. Dave Kyle.
Mrs. Robert Reabuxn and Mrs.
Milton Lavery directed a rec-
reation period. Hostesses were
Mrs. R. J. Drysdale and Mrs.
Raye Paterson. Luncheon was
served.
40th Wedding
A family dinner at the Do-
minion Hotel, Zurich this week
marked the 40th wedding an-
niversary of Mr. and Mrs.
Samuel Oesch, Hensall. The
couple took up residence in the
village three years ago, coining
from Stanley Township where
they farmed all their married
life.
Mrs. Oesch was the former
Mary Bedard. They have a
family of four, Russell, Stan-
ley Township; Kathleen, Mrs.
Robert Bell, Blyth; Anne, Mrs.
Earl Flaxbard, Zurich; Mae,
Mrs. Ray McNeil, Brucefield,
and 19 grandchildren.
The family, relatives and
friends gathered at the couple's
home for a social evening,
when they were presented with
a chime clock by the family,
flowers from the grandchild-
ren and other gifts. The grand -
'children entertained with a
mock wedding and accordion
numbers.

The October meeting of the
Woman's Missionary Society
of Hensall United Church was
held October 5, with Mrs. Geo-
rge Armstrong and her group
in charge. The devotional was
taken by Mrs. Wilbert Dilling.
Mrs. William Cole, Mrs, Or-
ville Jones. Sacred passages
were read by Mrs. Jarvis Hor-
ton. Prayer was offered by
Mrs. Fred Beer. The 23rd
Psalm was sung by Mrs. Arm -
Strong and Mrs. Orville Jones,
with Mrs. T. J. Sherritt accom-
panist,
Miss M. Ellis reviewed chap-
ters of the new study book,
"Signals for the Sixties." Mrs.
Armstrong spoke on the study
book, "Hasten The Day."
President Mrs. E. Rowe chair-
ed the business period when it

held the last Sunday in Octob-
er, . when Rev. R. A. Brook,
