Clinton Public School earned 118 points to be
champions the second year of the Central Huron
Public Schools field meet. The event was held
Friday afternoon at the sports field, RCAF Station
Clinton.
The local school also has four champions — sen-
ior girls, Bonnie. Boyes; junior girls, Judy Collins;
senior boys, Bob Batkin; junior boys, Scott Mac-
aulay.
Clinton Legion Juveniles
Punched three hits and a walk
in the eighth inning on Sunday
afternoon, October 1 scoring
three runs, to win the first OBA
baseball championship for el-
inton. They were behind 3 to 1
going into the last of the eighth
inning. Final score: Clinton 4,
Bowmanville 3.
This Bowmanville - Clinton
series for the OBA Juvenile
"B" championship was as close
and hard-fought as any world
_Series. Clinton won the first
genie in Bownianville 5-2;
lost the second game at Clinton
Community Park on Saturday,
September- 23 by 6-5,
Two Good Pitchers
The same two pitchers start*,
ed and completed all three
games, Southpaw John Masse,
for Clinton gave up only 11
hits in the three full games;
Jim Moorecraft, ,Bowenaiwille'e
nighthander was hit 26 ;times;
Masse struck out 31 and Moore-
craft 14 in three games, Wore-
craft had a. big advantage over
Masse issuing walks; he walked
only six while Masse gave up.
26 -passes,
Ron Livermore .was Clinton's
top hitter of the series with
six; Bartliff and Cummings,
four each; Pickett, Jacob and
Masse, three each; Don Lock-
hart, two and Bruce Cooper,
one hit.

ton, Bruce Cooper who had re.,

Corrected Scores
In the HSSA golf tourna-
ment at Wingham, Cathy Wal-
lis, Bayfield scored 52, as re-
ported in last week's story, to
place first in the competition.
However, Joanne Hulls, Bay-
field and Karen Elliott, Wing-
ham tied for second place with
a score of 53 (not 43 as was
reported):
grounded mit, Cooper going to
second; John jaeoh singled
then was opt at second on a
fielder's choice play on Ron
Liverniore's ground ball,
Charlie Bartliff hit his sec.,
ond double of the Series, scot*.
log Cooper, While Livermore
and Bailin/ were at bat, the
Sunday crowd suddenly .carte
to life, and continued cheering
and clapping until Clinton went
ahead on Roger Cummings
championship winning single,
scoring Livermore and Bartliff.
Masse struck out to end the
inning, but came on in the
ninth to strike out Wright, a
pinch-hitter. The next man
flied out to Cooper in centre,
and the final out was an easy
infield play.
In the first inning both teams
got runners around to third but
no one scored, In Clinton's next
two battings only six men
faced Meopecraft,
In the third, Bowmanville sc-
ored the first run of the game,
the result of a walk, a perfect
bunt, a fielder's choice which
forced the walked man out;
then another walk, Wiseman,
who had bunted, scored on
Twist's long fly to left field.
Bowmanville added another
in the fourth on a walk and a
double. But Clinton got this
back in their half.
There was no more scoring
until the seventh when Twist
who had tripled to left, scored
Bowmariville'e third run on a
beautiful hit and run play. Only
three Clinton men batted in the
last of the seventh. ,
Clinton could have, been in
trouble in the first of the
eighth. The first batter
walked but was picked off
first nicely by Masse. Then
Masse walked the next two bat-
ters, but forced the two final
outs to pop infield flies. That
left Clinton with two innings
to overcome the 3-1 lead and
they went out and won Clin-
ton's first baseball champion,
ship in the, bottom of the
eighth. •
A Mr. Inglis, of the OBA, and
Doug Thorndike, OBA repre-
sentative from Clinton, were on
hand, but no trophy was there
to be presented This will likely
take place at the Legion sports
and nomination banquet on Oc-
tober 23.
The win was a BIG one for
Doug Andrews, past president
of Clinton Branch of the Can-
adian Legion, and now Zone
Commander of Zone Cl. Doug
has managed most members of
this team for the past nine
years up through the various
minor ball ranks. Doug hint
self never played baseball, but
his coach, councillor Norman
"Puddle" Livermore, an old-
timer at the game, has been
coach of various minor sports
teams in Clinton.
