Winnipeg Urges
Bargaining Power
Alf Gleave, Chairman of the
National Farmers Union, in his
epening remarks to the Nation.
al Farmers Union Joint Board
Conference held in Winnipeg
on July 18 and 19 stated: "Far-.
niers 'are .justified when they
seek subsidies from government
to redress the imbalance of in-
come within the Canadian ec-
onomy created by the policy
tariff protection given to secon-
dary industries in Canada, But
the market place is the farm-
er's source of income, and he
must have bargaining power in
the market place,"
Mr, Robertson, representative
of the Canadian Wheat Board,
spoke to the meeting and an-
swered numerous questions, On-
tario delegates pursued a course
toward investigation of the
great advance in price and the
lowering of grade of grain be-
tween. the elevators at the.
Lakehead and the Eastern feed-
er. The Conference approved a
resolution that grades and pr-
ices of western feed grain
shipped to eastern provinces
be controlled and regulated in
the same manner as within the
prairie provinces and that the
Wheat Board store western feed
grains in government-owned
elevators in Ontario ports.
• Mr. Walter Jorgenson, Parl-
iamentary Seeretary to the
Minister of Agriculture, addres-
sed the meeting on ARDA.
The National Farmers Union
approved Manitoba's proposed
plan to extend committee struc-
tures. These committees are
representative of farmers at
at Local, District, Inter-district
and Provincial levels, and will
be conducted under the Farm-
ers Union, thus avoiding form-
ation of new farm arganiza-
tions and new financial obliga-
tions. The Ontario Farmers
Union ..has been working on this
plan4 but have not implemented
it up to the present time.
Resolutions dealt with includ-
ed western drought problems,
