Clinton News-Record, 1961-08-03, Page 5.Don't get all Hot
and Bothered
about the 3% Provincial Sales Tax
Actually, it need not cost
a small businessman much money
Even if you decide you need a new
cash register, you can get a good
one for $279. It will show separate
totals, one for the tax, and one for
the actual sale of goods. If you
don't do more than $1,000 worth of
business in one day, then this
machine is a good one to buy. ,
YOU MAY NOT NEED
a new CASH REGISTER I
Confidentially, we've been operating the News-
Record business quite easily ever since the
Dominion government first began levying an
8% sales tax, more than a dozen years ago.
(Then it was raised to 10% and later to 11%.)
The mechanics of adding the tax and charging
for it have never indicated to us the need for
a cash register. We probably won't need one
even now, when an additional 3% must be
added.
BUT 11 you feel you need a
cash register then,
SEE US BEFORE YOU BUY !
See us, before you spend too much money
Sure, the Provincial Government is going to
pay you for collecting their money, but it won't
figure out to very much. For instance, if you
operate a store doing $50,000 worth of taxable
business in a year, then you will collect $1,500
sales tax for Queen's Park. For that job, you
may receive 4%, or $60.00. That $60 won't
(go far toward buying a new cash register.
However, we feel confident that the
Onterlo government is interested in
*aSing the move into collecting sales
tax as much as possible. There will
e ,experts assigned to give you help
9,0 information about keeping
,records and reporting the tax.
it's going to be done, so we might as' well
.co-operate. It may be that you will need to
increase the number of records you keep. May-
be you'll irked some invoices, Oatements, or
sales sheets printed. We'll be glad to help you,
as soon as you know what you will require.
(Our Printing Shop will be a busy place,
with holidays all next week, and
as we've said before,

It's Berry Time
There's an awful lot of berries to a
dish pan,
As I found, when I was picking off the
hulls.
I sat there very near a couple hours
Picking out the -squashed ones and the
culls.
The kids were in the berry patch all
morning,
Picking till they thought their backs
would break,
Putting all the berries in the dish pans,
(But not until they had a belly ache!)
So we've berry juice all running up our
elbows,
Maybe even running •out our ears.
And after I've made berry jam
tomorrow,
We won't want to see another one for
years!
