Last Evening
What promised to be the, best
Lions Frolic ever held at Bay-
field got off to a wonderful
start last night with an excel-
lent parade. Included were sev-
eral floats, half a dozen looses,
lots .of children on decorated bi-
cycles and in 00.9rturne. March-
ing music was provided by Clin-
ton Comninnity Concert Band,
Reports were that 1,200 peel-
Ple had joined the fen at the
Community Park by 9 o'clock.
Varna defeated the hoist team
at softball, 12-10. Games of
bingo and others were played,
and pony rides were provided
for the children.

Tournaments
The sports committee of Clin-
ton Legion, under the chair-
manship of Len Arnston, have
arranged golf and shuffleboard
tournaments hi the near future.
The draws for the first round
of a matched play golf tourney
have been made and play starts
this weekend. Handicaps have
been set by a committee. As
yet there is no trophy for this
tourney which will be an an-
nual affair, Any merchant
who would like to present a
trophy for this affair for Leg-
ion members only, may contact
Len Arnston (HU 2-3894) or
president James Graham (HU'
2-9597).
A tournament for the Legion
Golf Trophy which was first
put up two years ago, and won
last year by J. E. Dale, will
be competed for on Sunday,
September 17.
A shuffleboard tournament
has been planned and play will
begin shortly. A local grocer
has intimated he would present
a trophy for this.

Softball League
(Varna Correspondent)
Varna is moving up in the
Central Huron Softball League
when they dumped a short-
handed Kippen team 16 to 5.
The game played in Varna on
Saturday, July 22, was watched
by a large crowd and was well
handled by Brucefield umpires.
The game 'vas featured by
the good pitching of Gordan
Johnston and a bases-loaded
homer by Jim Consitt.

Lovell and Menard'.
Leaders Dumped
On Tuesday night at the
Holmesville diamond, with Bill
Harris pitching his best game
of the season, the Holrnesville
boys trimmed the league .lead-
ing Bayfield team 20-2. Len
Wilson caught for Holmesville.
Bayfield battery was Al Hut-
chings and Don Bell.

and Mr. and Mrs. Hulls pre-
sented the top golfers with
prizes and fed them all at. the
club house lunch room.
Wins Golf Tourney
BEV BOYES
This young Clinton golf-
er won the Wingham
Golf Club invitation tour-
nament last Wednesday,
July 19 with a 67 score
on 18 holes. Bev has
competed in several dis-
trict tourneys this sum-
mer. Runner - up was
Tony Matlock, Kitchener,
one of Ontario's top
amateur golfers, with 68
strokes. Over 150
Western Ontario golfers
participated.

Oil Drilling On
Leiper's Farm
Begun Last Week
United Reef Petroleums Lim-
ited is drilling the first well of
a 10-well program the comp-
any has scheduled for comple-
tion this year on its 130,000-
acre block of gas-oil acreage in
the "pinnacle reef belt" of
Southwestern Ontario.
Identified as United Reef No.
1, the well is located on the
Leiper Bros. farm opposite
Burns Church, in the approxi-
mate centre of Hullett Town-
ship, Huron County. They are
exploring one of a number of
favorable geophysical indica-
tions of reef occurences indi-
cated' by gravimeter surveys
made of the company's ground.
Unique to this area is the rot-
ary type drill being used.

Clinton Branch 140 of the
Royal Canadian Legion author-
ized a meeting of its poppy
committee, called for Tuesday,
August 1, to order all supplies
for November 11. poppy and
wreath sales, before August 10
in order to save the provincial
sales tax effective September
1. All merchants or organiza-
tions in Clinton area who pur-
chased wreaths are required to
call Doug Thorndike (HU 2-
7090) with their order. Prices
will be comparable to last year,
