Clinton News-Record, 1961-07-13, Page 12New Swimming Instructors at Pool Two Clinton young people were successful in passing their swimming instruct- ors course at Thames Hall, University of Western Ontario at the end of June. Here Diane Campbell, and John Slavin prepare for a plunge in the Clinton pool. The 4-day course in London in volves ten hours a day, about half of it spent in the pool. Included is swimming practice, theory, practical teaching lectures and drills, artificial respiration and familiarization with Red Cross policies and procedures. 28 were enrolled. Mrs. Hazel Webster and Roy Campbell were present regarding a drain on their prop- erties. Council passed a motion declaring Monday, August 7, Civic Holiday, as a public day. Applications for building per- mits were approved. Alf Scholl is building an extension to his refrigeration plant at the slaughter house; Adam Black, an extension to his storage; E. L. Mickle and Son, four silos; and John Skea a new 'home to cost approximately $25,000, Tuckersmith Has Drain Request, Building By-law Reeve Ivan Forsyth presided for the July 4 meeting of Tuck- erstreth Township Council. Andrew Crozier requested council to again ask the De- partment of Highways to re- pair the Adams Drain where the drain crosses the highway into Lot 1, Con. 7 of Hullett Township, as there had been no action by the Department from a former request. Wilmer Broadfoot presented his bill as Warble Fly Inspec- tor upon completion of his work, and received payment in full. The clerk was instructed to apply for subsidy on the completed warble fly spraying program. The reeve and clerk were in- structed by council to investi- gate the possibility of Institut- ing a building by-law within the township. All tax payers who are in arrears for tbree years are to be notified, and payment would be appreciated in full or in part, within 30 days of the date of notice, Council passed provisionally four applications for tile drain- age loans. 13y-laws nine, ten, 11 and 12 for 1961 were passed, imposing a special drainage rate upon four successful ap- plicants :for tile drainage loans, The cle.rit was instructed to make application to the Pro. Edges Varna 19-18 In Overtime Game (Varna Correspondent) On Tuesday, July 4, Varna and Kippen hooked up in a free-hitting game on the Kip- pen field. After seven innings the game was tied at 17 all. Varna pushed a run across in the first of the eighth but Kippen came back in their half with two to win. .This was the first extra inning game of the year for Varna. Clinton .6,-Seaforth S In a well-played game here last Friday, Clinton turned ten scattered hits into six runs while Seaforth •could only get three runs from nine hits, Charlie l3artliff struck ont eight batters and walked three, but was given good support by his infielders to hold Seaforth to three runs. Tommy Dick, pitching for Seaforth, struck out nine Clinton batters. Dick was also Seaforth's best hitter with a double and a single, • Clintenrs big' hitters were John Jacob, Ron Livermore and Bartliff with two singles each; Ken Engelstad, a double and single, and Paul Pickett, a triple; Roger Cummings had a single. Clinton 9-Sebringville 0 With a young airman of juv- enile age - Pickard - from RCAF Station pitching six in- nings and giving up only one hit, and Ron Livermore giving up one hit in the seventh, Clin- ton beat Sebringville 9-0 at Community Park Monday even- ing, in an eight-inning game. Clinton turned nine hits into nine runs, five of them in the seventh inning. The best hit of the game was Ron Turner's triple in the seventh; he had replaced Bruce Cooper in centrefield in that inning. Paul Pickett, John Jacob and Don Lockhart all clouted doubles. Pickett and Jacob also had one single each. Ron Livermore hit two singles and Frank Ladd one single. Lobb Reunion The 15th annual reunion of the Lobb family was held in Riverview Park, Exeter, on Saturday, July 1, with 104 coming from Linden, Michigan; Stratford, St. Thomas, Wood- stock, Ripley, Burford, London, Oakville, Staffa, Kitchener, Chatham, Brucefield, Clinton and district. Following the dinner hour, president Howard Pym presid-. ed for a short business meeting. Greetings were read from rela- tives in British Columbia who were unable to attend. W. S. Lobb brought greetings from his families in Michigan and Mrs. George Henderson ex- tended greetings on behalf of the Baer families of Michigan. Riverview Park, Exeter, was again chosen for the 1962 pic- nic. A nominating committee was appointed to bring in the slate of officers for •the 1962 reunion: president, Herb Stevens; first vice-president, Jerry Pillar; second vice-president, Mrs. Ben Young; secretary-treasur- er, Mrs. Jay Williamson. The soprts program was en- joyed during the afternoon under the capable conveners Mr. and Mrs. Bill Lobb and Mr. and Mrs. Don Jervis.
