Perth Farmers Visit Huron Barns
Study Pastures, Corn, Loose Housing
"The more improvements
you make, the more time you
have to make other ones, and
if you do things the same old
way year after year you don'rt
get a nyrwhere."
This advice came from
George Robertson, of Robert-
son Farms, Colborne Township,
as members . of Perth County
Crop Improvement Association
viewed the Robertson No. 3
farm and heard what is plan-
ned in 'the way of crops and
buildings.
The Perth group, numbering
105, first visited the Bob Gees -
by farm (Birdsfoot trefoil and
beef) ; spent some time at the
No. I Robertson farm (beef,
loose housing, corn) proceeding
then via Goderich to Alvin
Battles' farm near Bayfield, for
inspection of rotational graz-
ing; then to R. Allen's, Bruce -
field, winner of the 1960 pas-
ture competition. Farther
south, the farm of Harry St-
rang was a mid-+afternootr stop,
and the final call was at Ed,
Miller's in' the Exeter area.
Douglas Miles, Huron. agri-
cultural representative, steered
the intinevarry.
At the original farm of El-
mer Robertson, father of
George, in the 8th concession
of Colborne, 250 steers were
fed last year. The farm has 65
acres of corn; no pasturing.
"We can make a gross gain
of $100," George Robertson
said, "and in a good year $120
or even $140. Costs do not go
over $75 per calf, not counting
the labor, ,but this does include
most of the interest on borrow-
ed money.
"We may try five-year rota-
tion and then go back to four.
Right now we have 65 acres
of corn out of 1'75 acres, 35 to
40 in grain and the rest in
hay."
The No. 3 term, acquired
about a year ago, is several
miles away from the other two,
which are on the Dunlop -Au-
burn county road. No. 3 is in
the 9th concession of Colborne,
just east of Nile. It is compos-
ed of 135 acres, and has no
baric, and is "a sort of hobby"
with the Robertsons. There is a
small house.
"We are trying to make im-
provements overcoming the
mistakes we made at ;home,"
Mr. Robertson said. ,"We have
got all the fences out, and put
about 15,000 tile on it. There
will be 100 •acres of corn on
this place. It cost $10,500 the
way it was, and we do not in-
tend to spend over $8,000 to
finish the !thing off.
"I have managed the chan-
ges, and my father designed
the feed lot, Dad seems quite
skilful in figuring out ideas
that work well in a feed lot
