Letter To The Editor
BUYER BEWARE
Clinton News-Record,
Clinton, Ontario,
The Editor.
As e result of Roman legis-
lation enacted long ago, to pro-
tect the public against unscrup-
ulous merchants, everyone sel-
ling goods and services to the
public were by law required to
display in a prcdninent place
a sign which read, "Buyer Be-
ware."
Today however, under our
modern and "democratic" soc-
iety, we are not accorded any
such warning, but rather the
"dealer" blandly sits behind his
benevolent smile and deluges
us with modern slogans such
as: "We guarantee what we
sell," "You can't lose". "We
guarantee to make you satis-
fied or give you double your
money back," etc. Guarantee,
this is the order of the day,
but "Buyer Beware". Listen to
this.
In an action between a
"dealer" and a customer which
was heard in Clinton, the court
ruled that, "The dealer" is not
responsible for any guarantee
on the ,product that he sells.
He does not have to replace a
defective part which he sells.
Moreover the court ruled that
a "dealer" is' not responsible
for the work performed on a
vehicle by his mechanics.
In view of these modern jud-
icial decisions, what protection
does the public have against
these people who daily allure
us with fancy slogans and half
truths? Oh, for the good old
days. Then at least we were
warned to: "Buyer Beware".
