towards good health,
Mx. Pearson stated that Can-
ada must play its part in arriv-
ing at some sort of security
and peace, and said that "Do-
mestic politics will involve de-
cisions which will determine
the future development of Can-
ada and the part our nation is
to play in obtaining peace and
security in the world."
He noted that though the
Liberals had their trouble in
Ottawa against the "embattled
hosts" of the other side, he
found that the "Tories filibust-
er their own bills—such as the
agriculture measure now berme
them. We've signified we're in
favour, but one after the other,
their back benchers get up and
talk and argue, instead of pas-
sing it."
"Since 1957," said Mr, Pear-
son, "our economy has slowed
down. I would not blame any
government for not being able
to solve all the problems with
which they have been faced;
but the Conservatives refuse to
admit any recession. How can
you solve a problem you refuse
to admit exists?"
Mr. Pearson predicted a time
when Canadians should differ-
entiate in the agriculture de-
partment between the East and
the West, with two ministers
of agriculture, one for each
section.
He charged that the Conser-
vatives had promised "Parity—
not charity," yet the cost-price
squeeze was still on the farm-
er, and where was the, sloe..
now, "It doesn't
the minister of agriculture
flood the country with expen-
sive and attractive propa-
ganda," said Mr. Pearson.
The Liberal leader suggested
that people should not get too
enthusiastic about selling grain
to other countries, until a firm
order was received. He urged
that Canada take the lead for
trade in the free world, and
told of the need for the United
Kingdom .and Europe, as well
as the United States to be in-
cluded in any trade agreements
made.
He also hit at the Conserva-
tives defence policy. "It's non-
sense to ask our pilots to go
up in fighter planes without
the speed and altitude of mod-
ern jet passenger planes," said
Mr. Pearson.
The speaker suggested that
the large turnout was indica-
tive of a. growing support of
Liberalism and predicted a vic-
tory. "When the next election
comes," he promised, "we can't
be beaten---because we won't be
beaten."
ter the wraps and the guest
book, Mrs. Percy Balderston
directed the callers to the liv-
ingrooin, which was festive with
yellow roses.
In 'the afternoon, Mrs. J. S,
Bell, Toronto, a sister of Mr,
Paterson, and Mrs. J, F, Pater-
son poured the tea, which was
served by Mrs, George Beattie,
Clinton; Mrs. Hugh McKerrach-
er, Hamilton; Mrs. William
Stewart, London and Mrs. Wil-
fred Newman, Streetsville.
In the evening, Mrs. J. Ken
muir, Toronto, a cousin of Mrs.
Paterson, and Mrs. 3. A. Mc-
Kerracher, Lindsay, a sister of
Mr. Paterson, were at the tea
table, and the assistants were
Mrs. Beattie, Mrs. H. McKer-
reciter, Mrs. H. B, Cheshire
and Mrs. H. H. Lodge.
On Sunday the Patersons and
their house guests attended the
morning service at St. John's
United Church, when the Rev.
J. W. Shaver offered the con-
gratulations! of .the congrega-
tion. Later, a family dinner
was held in the Birch Room of
the Pacific Hotel, when 27 sat
down under dainty wedding
bells and streamers,
