Let us eonsider economic
trends only., I wonder where
they start?
In the fluid milk trade, I
remember when there were two
or three dairies serving even
small villages. These were us-
ually individual farmer owned
operations, There were certain
minimum standards of health
and cleanliness that he had to
maintain. Somehow pressure
was brought to bear on govern-
ment to have these standards
raised until the point was
reached that all fluid milk must
be pasteurized.
The cost of purchasing and
operating this equipment elbn-
inated competition completely
in many smaller centres and
reduced it in all eases,
Perhaps this trend, for var-
ious reasons, has reached the
ultimate in the broiler indust-
ry and progress is being made
in the same direction in the
poultry industry.
However, I think a more ac-
curate Comparison could be
made in the meat trade. There
seems to be some sort of in--
aidlieas promotion at present of
the idea 'that a, serious percent-
age of meat on the market is not what it should be. And of
course it is implied that boy
cause of supposedly poorer fac-
ilities t.itis low quality meat is
waning from the small pro-
eessors
However unfair this implica-
tion may he, it has resulted
in a steady increase in facility
reetlirelineas to the point that
people who should know are
Iorcasting the disappearance
of half our present livestock
processors.
To bear this out, I heard only
yesterday that one sizeable
plant is presently closed and is
unlikely to make the necessary
expenditures required and that
two others are more or less in
the process of amalgamation.
What is to be the reaction of
livestock producers in the light
of these events? Will tann-
ers accept the "lullaby phil-
osophy": "Whatever will be,
will be!"? Or will farmers turn
to a more .challenging philos-
ophy as indicated by another
writer of verse "I am the mas-
ter of my fate, I am the cap-
tain of my soul!"?
Farmers can be masters of
their livestock production. They
CAN be captains of their bus-

require sacrifice, but not for
long, as has been proven by
Quebec Co-Op Packers and
Nova Scotia Co-Op Packers.
It will require determination
and action for just as long as
you want your Co-Operative to
be a success. It is not enough
