Officers Warns
Of Gun Dangers
(By H. H. Bellinger, Clinton,
Conservation Officer, Lake
Huron District)
On the morning of December
25, many bright eyed boys
(large and small) found to their
delight that Santa Claus made
them the owner of a shiny new
rifle or shotgun. Between this
time and the closing of the
hunting season, some of these
happy people will lose their
lives or may be injured by these
very gifts they received so joy-
ously.
When the recipient of a new
gun has not owned or used a
gun to any extent, it is the duty
of his or her parents or guard-
ian to see that each new owner
receives instructions in the
proper use „and handling of
these guns. Not only the meth-
od of firing, but also how to
carry the gun safely in the
field, in cars, how to clean and
store it, as well as the game
laws concerning what may and
may not be shot at the time.
Remember that new gun was
made for only one purpose-TO
KILL. Don't be like the mother
who complained that her son's
rifle was not functioning prop-
erly as it had discharged while
he was unloading it in the
house.
This is just one example of
carelessness that might well re-
sult in injury or death-usually
not to the man with the gun
but to some innocent bystand-
er. Loaded guns should not be
permitted in the home.
At this, time of year when we
are all safety conscious, both on
the road and in the home, let
us all include safety in hunting,
and' make this a truly HAPPY
NEW YEAR.
