Penhale, manager of the Exeter canning factory, is in Chicago this week attending a world canners convention. Mrs. "Orby Kestle returned to De­ troit on Tuesday after spending sev­ eral days with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Hy. Elworthy. Messrs. W. J. Beer and Earl Rus­ sell were in Toronto for a few days last week attending a convention of Rogers Radio dealers. Mrs. Ed. Knight, of the London Road south, is confined to her bed suffering from pneumonia. Miss M. G. Grant, R. N„ is in attendance. The Goderich Fair this year has a deficit on its books of over $1000 and an appeal is being made to the town council to wipe out the debt. Miss B. Howey left Saturday last to spend a few days in London, pre­ vious to leaving for Cereal, Alta., to visit with her brother, Mr. M. Howey Miss Ella Armstrong, of Londes- boro, returned to her home on Fri­ day after spending" a week with her sister Mfrs. Pethick and Mr. Pethick. Mr, H. W. Doerr was in Toronto last week attending a convention of the Ontario Municipal Electric Util­ ities and some valuable information was received^ Miss Loreen Dunn left for Toron­ to with Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Blatch- ford who visited in this community for some time. Miss Dunn will re­ main, for a few months. Reeve C. B. Snell is in Goderich this week attending County Council. Reeve Jas. Ballantyne, of Usborne; Reeve J. Hayes, and Deputy-Reeve, R. Goetz, of Stephen, are also in the County town. Mr. Thos. Calvert, who has been employed with Mr. Hedley May, was talJfep^seriously ill last week and was removiM^o the Exeter hospital. His aunt, Mrs. A. Finley, of Wingham, visited with him during the week. He is improving at present. Word was received in Exeter rec­ ently of the death in Toronto of Ludlow, son of Mr. and Mrs. Allan Pond, of Toronto. The deceased, who was five and a half years old, under­ went an operation for appendicitis, and lived for about two weeks after­ wards. Mrs. Gibson and children will remain in Exeter for the present.. DIED IN CLANDEBOYE Mrs. Rebekah Porte, of Clande- boye, widow of the late Geo. Porte, died on Wedneday of last week after an illness extending over several months. Her maiden name was Re­ bekah Abbott, her husband having predeceased her many years ago. She had been a resident of Clande- boye most of her life. One son and one daughter survive, Mrs. E. Hodg­ son, of Clandeboye and Bert, of De­ troit. Three brothers and one sis­ ter also survive; Dr. Wm. Abbott, of Seattle, Wash.; Dr. Jos. Abbott, of Albion, Mich.; John Abbott, of Lu­ can and Mrs. F. H. Neil, of London. The funeral was held Saturday after­ noon. Mr. and Mrs. W. F. Abbott and Mr. and Mrs. J. H. ELWORTHY HONORED BY FRIENDS Mr. Harry Elworthy had a suc­ cessful auction sale Of his farm .stock and implements on Wednes­ day of last week. The day was fine and the crowd was very large. Mr. Elworthy recently disposed of his farm to Mr. Samson McFalls and in company with Mrs-. Elworthy left Wednesday evening to spend the rest of the winter with their daugh­ ters in Detroit. On Friday evening about sixty of their neighbors and friends from the 2nd and 3rd con­ cession of Usborne met as a surprise at their home and spent a Very en­ joyable evening in dtincing find games. During the evening Mr, and Mrs. Elworthy were presented with an address expressing the es­ teem in which they have been held in the community and extending best Wishes for the future.
