Clinton Court
(Continued from Page One)
Constable H. Twaddle, OPP,
Goderich, investigated the acci-
dent,
Frank Donnelly, defence coun-
sel, pleaded for leniency for his
client. He felt that Layton was
not as guilty of carelessness as
Carter had been, Carter was fin-
ed $50 and costs, and licence sus-
pended one year, at an earlier
court,
Mr, Donnelly admitted his
client could have been guilty of
other offences, but not of careless
driving.
Magistrate Holmes said he felt
Layton was very lucky to be alive,
and "The Lord looks after drunk-
en sailors and fools," He said in
his book the offence was careless
driving. 'In that 239 feet of dis-
tance along the shoulder of the
road, Layton could have come to
a stop, just by taking his foot off
the gas, it he had not been racing
and determined to pass. Here
were two silly fools, immature
mentally, taking their cars to try
them out."
Mr. Donnelly suggested that the
bod had already suffered grievous-
ly in hospital, and he needed his
licence to come in to work, The
magistrate contended he was not
responsible for this punishment,
which Layton had brought upon
himself, and could not let it in-
fluence him in his fine. The mag-
istrate said, "I hope it will have
some effect on other young peo-
ple in town, but don't believe it
will."
Charges of break, entry and
theft, against Douglas Gibbings
(who is in jail at Goderich) were
adjourned to Thursday in Gode-
rich court.
ter-Provincial Team match in To-
ronto in August. This is to es-
tablish the Canadian Champion.
All their expenses will be paid at
that time. This includes two days
practice and two days play with
all caddy fees, meals and reserva-
tions at The Seaway Hotel,
Susanne describes the play on
Friday as "exciting" with the gal-
lery of on-lookers following the
contestants, She was six up until
the last four holes when she ran
into trouble.
The whole tournament played
eighteen holes in the morning and
the top girls played eighteen holes
in the afternoon,
Nancy Smith's score for ee
holes was 84 and 78—total 162,
while Susanne's was 83 and 86—
totall 169, Her handicap is 11.
Following the tournament there
was a tea for the girls at which
top golf officials were present and
prizes presented. Susanne receiv-
ed a white flannel blazer bearing
the Ontario Team crest with
CLGU bar,
A thrill for the girls entered in
this play was a practice game on
Thursday with- outstanding play-
ers, including Marlene Stewart
Streit. It was arranged by the
Ladies Golf Club to encourage the
Juniors.
Susanne, daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. Walter Hilton, is 5' 8" tall,
athletic, and modest of her own
achievements in sport. She will go
into grade 12 at London Central
Collegiate following the vacation.
It was only two years ago that
she became interested in golf, and,
like her mother before her, she
learned to play on the Bayfield
Golf Course. (Mrs. Hilton, the
former Lillian Aikenhead, daugh-
ter of Mr. and Mrs. Mac Aiken-
head. has been spending summers
in Bayfield for 30 years).
Last year, Susanne, after play-
ing in contests at Goderich, Strat-
ford, London, and St. Thomas,
was encouraged by Stewart Cook,
Stratford, to enter the Ontario
Junior Team Play. Much to her
own surprise, she finished sixth.
From that on her ambition was
whetted. Now she literally eats,
sleeps, and lives golf.
She entered the Ontario Lad-
ies Open Golf Championship, In
the qualifying round for the top
32 of 120 players, she was 23. Int
the championship flight, sine was
teamed with Kay Helleur, the
Toronto Ladies District Champ-
ion. Susanne was eliminated on
the 17th hole. (Kay Helleur was
defeated in the final match by
16-year-old Gail Harvey).
