Colts Lose Hard -Fought Game To Exeter
Last Friday Night, With Only Nine Men
Scoring three goals in the last
seven niiniiteS of play enabled the
Exeter Mohawks to defeat the
Colts by a close 6-5 ecore.
In what Wetted out to, be one
of the best played hockey games
of the season, the short-handed
Colts matched stride „for stride
with the Mohawks and had a two
goal teed built up in the third
period when twopenalties left
them a man short, and Exeter
proceeded to tie the game up on
two goals. hy•Boom Gravett. Then
while Jaek, Meriara was sitting
out a questionable holding penalty,
Bob Baynham scored what proved
to be the winning goal.
Ken Lee got the Colts off to
a one goal lead when . he was
Johnny on the spot to bat benne
a rebound off the stick 'of Bob
Garen: This first period lead stood
up until the six minute mark of
the second period vehen Gravett
scofed on a blistering shot from
just inside the, Colt blueline,' Bob
Baynham put the Mohawks ahead
for the first time when he scored
on a pass from Cowan. Two min-
utes later Clinton tied the score
on one of, the prettiest goals of
the gam Dok Doig SPorecl on a
backhand shot, after being nicely
set up by Ken Doig. Minutes lat-

Kenny leriig, "Red" Loader kept
the Mohawks within one goal
when he finished off a Passing
play from Gravett. Three mintit-
es later Ken Doig scored unas-
sisted when he let a shot go that
the Exeter goalie caught but
couldn't, hang onto, this again
gave the Colts their two goal
lead which they held until those
last fatal seven minutes.
There were ten penalties called
this rugged hockey game in-
cluding three majors for .fighting
and a ten minute misconduct.
Boom Gravett turned out to
be the scoring hero as he scored
three goals for the Mohawks; Bob
Baynham with two, including the
winner and Red Loader rounded
out the scoring -for Exeter.
Jack Meriam led the Colts with
two markers and singles went to
Ken Lee and Bob Doig. Ken Doig
with, his goal and three assists
moved himself into second place
in the scoring race, only two
points behind the leader Mary
Shantz of Mitchell.
Next .Friday night,. January 2,
these same two teams go right
back at it again in Exeter, in
what should be a slam-bang hock-
ey game.

Christmas has passed for 'lin-
other year and I hope it has been
a happy one for all 1:)f you, yet
having heard the death toll on
the highwaYs for the holiday
weekend 1 realize that for too
many this Christmas has been
tragic. I would wish you a most
happy and successfill New Year
yet I know only too well that by
the time January 4 Mils around
there will be some missing. Let
us all be just a little more care-
ful in 1959 and keep the number
of traffic deaths to an all time
low. It can he done.
For the farmer 1958 was gen.
erally a little better than the
previous year and prospects for
1959 seem encouraging. Almost
every time I write one of these
articles I feel the need for more
aceurate figures and Statements
•but find 1 have to use what es
available.
In 'forecasting for 1959 I would
say that we can look for high
grain prices: Mr. Harkness, Min-
ister of Agriculture, has stated
that all western grain will be de-
liverable to the elevators this crop
year, This in turn could mean,
that western farmers may not
be as interested in feeding live-
stock next year. As thi$ will put
more grain on the market for
1959-60 the price of grain will
probably not increase as much as
it otherwise would, however with
a reduction in Western feeding
we J, could look for better prices,
for livestock particularly in hogs
and poultry products. Jtist to con-
fuse the question a little more I
might • add that all this would
change drastically if w were to
have a very good:or very bad crop
year. Finally please do not file
this forecast as it might prove

At this time I would like te
point out thevital importance
of having a market for our farm
prat:Ince. I can only produce broil-
ers if r have a contract with
someone to buy these broilers.
If 1 produce eggs, as yet, tan
sell them but again I will get
something less than if I had a
contract and can probably look
forward in the near future of
having to seek a contract to be
able to sell eggs.
I can bring my hogs to Clinton
and know that they will be sold.
Also I can expect at least an
equal price to the Toronto mar-
ket
I can take my fat cattle to a
community sale or, to the Stock-
yards in Toronto and know that
they will be sold. However if I
bring my cattle to Clinton I can
be sure that I will get the To-
ronto price less transportation
to Toronto. Why should this be
when in most cases my cattle will
only go to Stratford or -Kitchen-
er?
Many times this transportation
factor gives, me a higher price
foe my hogs in Clinton, why then,
shouldn't it do the same for my
cattle?
1 don't pretend to know. all the
answers or how this should be
brought about but think all farm-
ers will agree that there is no
object in producing a product for
which there is no market, Many
independent broiler growers found
this out to their sorro* many
