ALCOHOLISM
"Up to six percent of your em-
ployees may be 'alcoliblics. If your
firm is above average, one of every
20 workers is probably suffering
from alcoholism."
Business executives gave heed to
David Archibald when, he challeng-
ed them with these statistics re-
cently. He knows the facts. He
has been Executive Director of
0 n t ,a. r i o Alcoholism Research
Foundation since its foundling in
1952, This data came through an
intensive scientific study of indus-
tries in one Ontario county. There
is no reason to suppose that they
would not apply to industry in
general.
It is interest'ng to learn that
Archibald's keen interest in this
alcohol problem was awakened by
the toll liquor took amongst fly-
ing officers during the war, As a
radar operator and later bomber
pilot he saw 'liquor end the career
of far too many fliers, some of
them his pals in the RCAF.

The Uttar
I've chosen the Thanksgiving
season to bring your attention to
a matter for which so far we can-
not igive thanks; namely, the de-
feat of muscular 'dystrop'hy.
We 'estilmate About 1.0,000 Can-
adians, mostly children, are: suffer-
ing from this progressive and
crippling disease of the muscles,
Few of the child victims will live
beyond adolescence. So far there
is, no known cure.
Our figure of 10,000 is merely •
ant estiMate because many parents
aren't aware that their children
have MD,
These people should know that
an association edsta in Canada
whose function' S to help them
to find out if they have a victim
of MD in the family, and to assist
them in every way until a cure
is found. This body, of which I
aim honorary chairman, is: the
Muscular Dystrophy Association of
'Canada, They are spending thou-
sands each year in research to find
a cure.
By publishing this letter and
,encouraging your readers, to let
us know of cases in their families,
their circle of friends, or their
practices, you will be anaiMng a
much. needed Ic:ontributioin, . to tile
work already in progress aimed
at defeating this disease.
Information will be gratefully
receimed by The Muscular Dys-
trophy Association of Canada, 137
Wellington Street West, Toronto,
and. 'forwarded to local chapters
and committees across the coun-
try,
Yours Sincerely,
Gus 'Ryder,
Honorary Chairman.
