LIFE INSURANCE
contributes financially
to medical research at
CANADIAN
UNIVERSITIES
Medical research aims at
a longer, happier life
for you and your children
Thanks to untiring research, many dangerous diseases
are under control today. A number of other "killers",
however, are still unsolved problems.
In the over-all research effort being made to solve them,
the medical schools of Canadian universities are playing
an important part.
To help strengthen and develop their research programs,
the Life Insurance Companies in Canada are providing
research Fellowships to these universities, every year.
Fellowships are awarded to graduates who have been
appointed to teaching or research staffs of Canadian
medical schools. During the past nine years 107 Fellow-
ships of this nature, amounting to half a million dollars
have been granted.

Letter to the Editor
ABOUT Elt/44.
The Editor,
Clinton News-Record
-Strange and sad at not that
there IS always' someone in his
vast arrogance who likes to smite
down tthase who dare to show
paw? Pity far the animal world,
so helpless in men's hands and
the tale of whose treatment at
the handS. of humans would make
the very stones cry out.
Too had, Mr. Smiley, you don't
choose to turn your rhetoric the
other way — sorrow over lack
of pity, of which there Its plenty.
The alarm of the .S,p,c.A, over
the Lindsay hull-fight is that
once having gained a footing in
Canada for even a bloodless fight,
9, greater menace' might arise. One
step more and we will have the
horrible spectacle of a real bull-
fight and then everyone, including
yaiLl, wait say it should never have
been alloWed in the first place.
Don't think it couldn't happen
here. Any people so indifferent ov--
er e)oisting 'treatment of its food
animals would Rock to see a bull-
flight. Canada's treatment of its
food 'animals is a national dis-
grace.
The teasing, [goading, and tor-
menting of any animal, be it cat,
dog, hull or what have you is 'a
degrading spectacle and does af-
fect one mentally and spiritually.
6ren dare to say there isn't
something wrong with the mental
processes- of a man tin our town
who, on returning empty handed
from a hunting trip, said he- at
least got a shot at a blue heron!
A beautiful, graceful blue heron-
'
and all he thought of was to
take -a pot shot at it?
Witness also the children at
London Zoo who -so teased and
poked at the helpless baby puma,
recently acquired from. Toledo,
that it had to be removed to
safer quarters. Do you -dare to
slay their thinking (mental health.)
has nothing wrong -with it? No-
thing wrong with the mental
health .af ,children in our town
who shoot song birds?
So adults think ifs all right
to tease and' torment a -bull,
which is the game thought pro-
cess, why the comparison with
humans -playing hockey or taking
part In iswianining. :contests? There
is no parallel whatsoever for these
participants are there of their
own free will and accord.
Or are we to believe the bull
-coming to Lindsay will buy his
own ticket, herd himself into a
truck or train and on -arrival
prance gaily into the ring to take
part in the sport, so called?
Since he is so much stronger
and "meaner" than the poor mat-
ador, the latter will no doubt
have to be prodded from behind
to get him into the ring at all
-and with -only a sword, poor thing.
Well, well.
Strange is it not -that in a real
bull-Might the bull is the one who
invariably gets killed and net the
matador?
And -don't think there 'aren't
those who have given cr ?heir
time -and means and energies to
the alleviating of the sufferings
of our food 'animals (ithe same,
,doubtless, who are writing the
mayor of Lindsay) where have
you been all this- time?
The S.P.C.A. backed by these
same people has succeeded in hav-.
ing a first bill presented to parlia-
ment to enforce more humane
methods .af slaughter in 'Canada.
But there is delay and more delay.
The cruel' and the stupid ameing
us pass by on the other side. But
such are hard to .reach.
But I -am wasting time. I for-
get you only listen 'to those -who
refuse to "stomp 'a spider, kill
a mosquito or pound a rattle
snake".
"Impudent poppycock" yourself
and also drivel.
