REP] RESENTS ONLY A PART? BALDERDASH
IT WAS THE editor of a great daily who
said it was .a "poor sort of man indeed, who
could not find something in every daily paper
to make him raging mad."
We won't claim the distinction every day,
but we were enraged by the suggestion put for-
ward recently by school teachers, that November
11 as a holiday, for children should not be con-
tinued. Their reasons were—that the children
had no remembrance of the last war, most Leg-
ion members had no remembrance of the first
world war and anyway the Legion represents a
part of the population—why should the rest of
the people do what they want?
Good heavens! have we let the coming gen-
eration grow up without a .knowledge of the
fears and horrors of war? Have they no ap-
preciation of the battles fought before they were
born? Have our teachers failed an their duty to
teach them this?
Apparently so—for the Legion members who
most certainly represented us all—including the
coming generation (at that time unborn) when
they donned the uniform and went out to defend
our way of life, now are told they only represent
part of the people. A Sad state of affairs, indeed,
Consider the teachers themselves—do they
attend November 11 services in the area where
the children they teach can, see them and copy
their example? How Can a teacher who sup-
ported a resolution to cancel the November 11
holiday go back to his classroom and teach the
meaning of
"If we break faith with those who die
They shall not rest
Though poppies blow on Flanders' fields;"
A. reverent attitude on that day can best
be achieved, we think, by a holiday (after prop=
er instruction) —on which the children attend
with their teachers a remembrance day service,
complete with flags, parade, the two -minute
silence, etc., and the rest of the day off to
mark in the children's memory a day of import.
ance, A day which their eiders deem important
and one in which respect and honor is paid to
Canada's warriors throughout all her battles .for
freedom.
QUITE A PRECEDENT
LIKE HUNDREDS of people in this district
we have a membership in the community credit
union. Other hundreds belong to Clinton's sec-
ond credit union. We have no ill feelings to-
ward the organization. In fact we feel that the
Credit Unions fill a definite need and are of
help to those who make proper use of them,
Along with the rest of its members, we feel
pride in the. new building recently completed,
and look forward to the time when landscaping
will be finished and the modern drive' in window
is put into use.
With regard to landscaping, however, we
do have some things to say:
The town sold the lot to the Credit Union,
The town councillors must have recognized the
fact that it was a low lot, and would have to
be built up. Perhaps they were pleased to sell
such a lot, at a reasonable figure.
But -- they apparently did not look far
enough into the futureto to see what the building.
up process would produce. The result has been
to bury both sidewalks along the borders of
the lot. That area has been the route of a
natural watercourse — and when heavy rains
come, they take everything before them. What
may happen to the low lawns and gardens be-
hind the Credit Union, the owners can predict.
To return to the sidewalks. It would seem
probable that anyone who damaged sidewalks
In town should have to repair them. The PUC
has to, if their equipment causes damage, The
construction men have to, if their machines
break up pavement.
But the town council has decided to pay
for new sidewalks along the highway. The
Credit Union is going to be asked to pay for
the walk along William Street.
Why the 50-50 deal?
If the sale of this low corner lot two years
ago now results in an expenditure for side-
walks — where goeth the wisdom of said sale?
Is this the start of a long range plan to
replace all sidewalks in town? If not, then why
establish this precedent of paying half the dam-
ages. Where is this going to leave the town
with the PUC?
. We are not condemning the directors of
the Credit Union. Rather we feel they are keen
businessmen who had nothing to lose by asking,
If their request had been refused they would
probably have taken it all in good humour and
done the job themselves.
-- -4-AND ANOTHER THING
WE DISAGREE with Council on still an-
other point. This matter was not brought as a
motion, but rather as a discussion, and the
Mayor was .asked to take the "feeling of the
Council" to the PUC. We don't see how His
Worship can do this when there was no motion
put, and no vote on the questions. However —
The thing is `, some of the councillors do
not favour the building of a new PUC building.
They have a right to their own personal
opinions, but they have shown little interest in
discovering the facts — the real need for this
new building.
The arguments against seem weak: too far
to go to pay bills; not using present offices to
th
Also of course, the water tower, in the far
corner of St. Andrew's Ward (beyond the race
track) and the hydro lines all over town.
Now of even partial consolidation of this net-
work can be achieved, it would help the effic-
iency of the PUG. That should be the desire
of all Clinton people. After all, it's your money!
As we understand it the new building would
house the business office, the warehouse, (where
all wire, cables, pipe, tools, etc, would be kept),
and the garage to house the trucks. From this
location the superintendent could organize his
three groups of men to the best advantage. The
pumphouse .and sub -station would be a mere
