Three Brigades
At Auburn Fire
(By our Aubtqn .correspondent)
Firemen •from .Myth ,and C00.-
Klett helped the Auburn volunteer
brigade Monday when flames gut-
ted an instil brick home owned by
Ed Davies- and threatened other
nearby hottses,
Neighbors and occupants Arn.'
old Craig and his wife carried out
the furniture from the ground
floor, All furnishings upstairs
were lost, All that is left of the.
house is a blackened, charred. shell.
Firemen said the blaze started
in the area of the. chimney. They
were able to save nearby homes
,and buildings by Wining water on
the roofs.
"The need to drive and walk
with more than ordinary care
comes as we begin the final =nth
of the year," Chief Constable H,
R. Thompson emphasized this
week "EVeri for those citizens.
who are , normally careftil and.
thoughtful in the presence of mot- •
or traffic, the added hazards of the
season require increased attention..
"Early darkness and unsettled
weather in particular demand of
each of us that while walking we
must remember that motorists find
it difficult to perceive darkly cloth-
esk in poor light and
that the ability to stop a ear or
truck abruptly on a 'wet or slip.
pery road surface is greatly reduc-
ed. As .drivers, it is equally im-
portant to remember exactly the
same things,
"Repeated warnings are given to
all pedestrians to persuade them
todevrkloo the habit of crossing on-
ly at „intersections. That people-
continhe to disregard this very
sensible piece of advice, with dis-
astrous results, is a matter of
great concern. However,. if all
motorists would always remem-
ber to slow down and be alert for
pedestrians at intersections, such

is worth reminding all mot- •
orists that the average automo-
bile, whatever its horsepower, con.
treks or elaborate fittings, still de-
ponds for its ultimate control on a
contact with the road about equal

"In an effort to demonstrate the
very practical benefits available
to all through, improvement in
their driving and Walking behav-
iour, a campaign with this end in
view is being conducted all across
Canada during this first week of
December. Leading Canadian fig-
ures in all walks of life are lend-
ing their full support, It is my
hope that the people of Clinton_
