It's reassuring to know that it has a habit of staying on the job. The reason is that your telephone Operatd$ from banks of giant batteries in the telephone exchange. Should power go off for any rea- son, these are charged by a Diesel motor standing by for just such an emergcncy, So the uninterrupted service you enjoy is no accident. It takes forethought, equip. meat-and money. All are necessary if you are to have the best possible telephone service 24 hours 4 day. l'Hil 06Lf. t6L,IEolHQNrli COMPANY O>r CANADA (By tt Carl Hemingway) The Government has set - a floor price for turkeys-25c per pound live weight, Toronto for under 2.0, pounds. By the time this ap- pears you will, no doubt, -have heard considerable comment, The first reaction will be' that the support price is too low.- Let us consider just what this means. First: we must agree that the Gm/eminent has no desire to go into the turkey busniess and .I don't think the turkey growers would want it to; thus the price had to be low. However, to take legal action on import bans or quotas. a support price. had to be set which was the real . reason tor setting it, Secondly. the price had to be low in view of the experience of the U. S. government in price setting. Some people learn by the experience of others, which is cheapest, others learn by their own experience which is s•ometimeo- painful and expensive, some never learn which is. dis- aoteroua. • )' As. a -result of the. government action previously, turkeys are cur- rently selling in California for 15- to 16c- a lb. and were being im- ported into Canada • in quantity, thus we can be thankful to ...the government for making it legally possible to impose import bans and quotas which I understand has already been- done. Again we might consider a high- er support price. The U. S. has gone to 'great lengths to give 90 to• 95 percent parity price to far? mers; 'the result is huge surpluses. They have tried to control pro- duction in grain crops by their soil bank plan yet after spending huge amounts to reduce acreage production increased'. Now they are facing international difficul- ies in trying to dispose of govern- ment owned grain. The United States has, 'by these policies, earn- ed 'the doubtful distinction of be- ing the first country to have a national debt greater than the total assesed value of the property of the countr. y, I realize that farmers are work- ing at a disadvantage in Canada but I think we should learn from the experience • of the U. S. and realize that government buying of farm produce• is' not the answer. Industry has a similar problem. In the Steel industry expenses are increasing at the rate of 9 percent in the last year while production efficiency has . increased only 5. percent, This is the same process as' buying a farm and growing a cash crop year after year with- out returning any fertilizer to the lancL Farginers know that event- Rubber StampS Marl Deiices of every description Stamp Pads • Sold by Clinton .11ews4tecord Crich .Family Hold 22iid.
