Canada Looks 'Pretty Good!.
To, Pair lack from Scotland:
(By our Bayileld ,correspondent)
Canada looks pretty good to Mr, They docked in Halifax on March
They carne by train to Clinton
on Tuesday. And all the way over
14-year-old Kenneth kept asking
his father. "Has Hayfield chan-
ged? Are there still the same
fishing spots?" etc.
'.Ken admitted that he liked
Scotland, but both he and Nancy
were quite definite in that Cana-
da was the best place to bring up
a family. And if suitable work
were available they could think
of no nicer place to live than
than Hayfield,
Mrs. Castle said that most of
the passengers on the SS New
York were British emigrants and
a few foreigners. Nine out of
ten people to whom she talked
aboard ship were headed for To-
ronto. Many had no place to go
and not much ' money but they
were so optimistic about the fut-
ure, Let us, hope that they con-
tinue to feel that way, and the
way Mrs. Castle expressed it,
"We're really here to stay this
time, and all so happy to be back.
Living conditions had changed in
Britain," she said.
Another Guest
George• Castle- and William'
Lubetsky surprised the former's
parents, Mr. and Mrs. T. Castle
and stayed over Sunday night
with them. They had been sent
East to drive four new trucks
(one on top of the other, double-
deck) from Toronto to Calgary for
their employer. While Kenneth
Castle thinks there is no place
like Ontario, his brother George
ie quite convinced that Alberta
is the best province.
STANLEY
Mrs. Grant Love, Cara,' Mich.,
visited her sister, Mrs. Stewart
Baird, over the weekend.
Mr. and Mrs. William Rice and
Mr. and Mrs. Fred Rice, Buffalo,
N.Y., visited Mr. and Mrs. Walter
Baird last Sunday and also atten-
ded the 'funeral of the late Keith
Taylor. ,

and Mrs, Kenneth Castle and four
bbys who'have returned after an
absence of almost ,three years in
Scotland,
Seven-year-old" Scotty said , to
his mother after they arrived,
"Mummy, this is my favourite
country. I'm going to -stay here
for the rest of my life,"
Kenneth Castle served six and
a half years with the British Mee,
chant Navy during the war and
married a Scottish girl in Edin-
burgh, Their two oldest sons
Kenneth and Garry were born
there, Then they decided to come
to Canada, They arrived in Aug-
ust 1946 and stayed with his Par'
ents, Mr. and• Mrs. Thomas W.
Castle, Hayfield, until they loca-
ted in Kitchener. Here they pur-
chased a home and their two
younger boys, Scotty and Dona
are Canadians by birth.
The homeland kept calling to
Mrs. Castle (Nancy). She was
homesick. So, in August 1954
they disposed of their horhe in
Kitchener and left for Edinburgh
to be with her grandfather who
had raised her.
"It was an expenSiVe experi-
ment:" related Nancy •,(Ken' wife
still looks like a young Scottish
lass despite the cares of a family).
We were only in London looking
around the shops when I realized
we'd' made a mistake. I stopped
dead in my tracks and said: "Ken
I wish we'd never comet"
But she was glad to have been
with her grandfather who died -in
February, 1056. Since then the
Castles set their sights on Can.
ada.
During the* Edinburgh Festival
last year she met Canadians from
Vancouver who encouraged them,
and offered any assistance which
they could give, advising them to
locate in British Columbia. Sp in
February of this :year,, Ken Cas-
tle, signed • -on the -Norwegian
tramp ship "Faria" bound for
Vancouver with a cargo of steel
pipes for the nateral gas, pipe
lines in Northern Alberta. With'
her was a sister ship with a deck
cargo of pipes. • They .struck the
worst storms which Ken had ever
experienced and all the deck car-
go of the sister ship, valued at
$25,000, was washed . overboard.
