Saturday Weddings in District Churches
The Rt, Rev, W. A. Townshend,
'Suffragan Bishop of Huron, last
Thursday received• the Lamp Of
1,4earning award from the 9,000
member Ontario Secondary School
TeacherS Federation.
This has 'been an annual award
since 1951, given to the non-teach-
ing individual noted for "an out-
standing contribution to second-
ary school education in Ontario,"

He has been a member of the
Board of Education since 19$3,
heading the polls for board elec-
tion each time but one, He was
chairman in 1937, 1942, 1946 and
1951 and was chairman of the Ad-
visory Vocational Committee,
which served H. B., Beal Technic-
al and. Commercial High School in
1935, 1949 and 1953.
He is a past president of the
Public School Trustee Association
of Ontario and of the Urban Sec-
tion, Ontario Education• Associa-
tion. He was a member of the
Royal Commission on Education
under Mr. Justice Hope, which
introduced extensive changes in
education,
Bishop Townshend's career in
education began many years ago,
when he began tennhing as prin-
cipal of Manilla Continuation
School, following his graduation
from Huron College in 1921. He
married Kathleen Elliott, Bay-
field, herself a school teacher. In
1926 he was ordained a deacon,
and was appointed rector of Bur-
vie Parish in Bruce County. '
His cenneetion with Bayfield,
which be considers his home vil-
lage, has' been kept alive, and his
visits there are highlights in vil-
lage life, and to his Lordship. He
was present and spoke at the re-
cent official opening of the parish
hall at Trinity Church, there, and
was the guest sPeaker at the of-
ficial opening, of the new public
school in Bayfield a year ago; He
spends summer vacations in the
village, and is generally present
for confirmation services in the
Trinity, St. James and St. John's
churches in Bayfield, Middleton
and Varna.
His belief in teaching as fine
career for man or woman has
remained steadfast and •has in-
fluenced the training of his own
family, Of his ten children, six—
three sons and three daughters—
have chosen teaching as a career.

School, London; Betty Jean at Ry-
erson and Nancy is at London
Teachers' College completing her
training to be a teacher. John
teaches at Aberdeen and James at
Knollwood. William is a master
at London Teachers' College.
Nomination of Bishop Town-
shend for the Lamp of Learning
was made by the London Home
and School Council, the London
Local of the OSSTF, and Dr. G.
E. Hall, president of the Univer-
sity of Western Ontario. His
nominations cited him for "his
keen interest, over a quarter of
a century in education' and for his
outstanding accomplishments in
that, field,"

At a banquet meeting of minis-
ters and laymen in Ontario Street
United Church recreation hail last
Wednesday, the representatives of
,Anglican, United, Baptist and
Presbyterian congregations con-
sidered taking on a sector project
in th district this fall.
Rev. Sterling J. Iiitdwp, of the
Canadian, Connell of Churches
outlined the program, and the
meeting was under the chairman-
ship of the Rev, R. G. MacMillan,
Knox Church, Goderielt, who con-
vened a similar project in the
county last year.
The 103 men will now approach
their own congregations with
view to reaching a decision for
