Last weekend the actual may..
ing of the W. C.. Newcombe
drug store into it. new location
six doors south along Victoria
Street, began with the shifting
of the dispensary equipment and
drugs.' This morning the big
moving job is complete, and al-
ready Visitors to the store are
beginning to receive their free
gifts, and sign for chances on
the big draws.
Right up until Saturday night,
Newcombe's store ,will be the
centre of attraction for the shop-
ping public. For these first
three days, everyone will re-
ceive a gift, plus free draws on
$300 worth of prizes including
a 35mm camera.
'Finished in lime green and
gleaming white, the thoroughly
modern store is one of the most
up-to-date in the country, and in
at least one respect, can claim
a first among, drugstores in Can-
ada, All around the store, at
the top of the shelves is a ring
of fluorescent tubing, shielded
by a white plastic frame on
which are mounted names of
the various sections of the store
on removable plastic plates. This
method of naming is the first
of its kind in Canada.
Self Seive
The Newcombe store is using
the new Idea, of self serve, as it
has been developing across the
country, Of •course the drugs
themselves, and some other
parts of the stock will be hand-
led in the customary way, but
magazines, greeting cards, stock
Medicines, salves, candies, lip-
sticks, pail-polish, et.C., will be
available directly to the custom-
ers. They will be expected to
take the item they prefer to the
counter to have it wrapped.
This method of service is
found to speed up the process of
buying, and also allows for
smaller staff in the store.
Heating
The store is surprisingly clean
and bright now, and it will be
kept that way quite easily, said
Mr. Newcombe, because the air
is continually filtered. Heating
is accomplished by forced air,
travelling under the floor.
Spacious storage space at the
.rear of the store will accom-
modate extra stocks of large or-
ders. Here also is the dispen-
sary, and a tiny office for Mr.
Newcombe. •
family, as soon as the school
term is over.
Mr. TownSend, Comes from. St.
Thomas, but has been in Goder-
ich since 1936. His:' hobbies are
curling and larwil. bowling.
Mrs. Lillian Newman who has
been with the Newcombe drug-
store for two years, is also a
member of the staff, and Mrs.
Newcbmbe will continue to as-
sist with the 'Work.
