The biggest and moat successful
year IA the history of rf farm club
work in Huron County was
brought to its climax at • Exeter,
Friday night, when close to 1400
persona gathered in the .auditor-'
lulu of the Son:* Huron District .
High School,, to see honors and
prizes passed qut to 5.02 tam
y.oung people who .earned them
with their work in 82 clubs,. The
prize-giving program (unpreced-
ented for magnitude), saw over
33,500 in cash prizes, as well AS
silver cups, crests, sweaters, cer
tificates and books, presented.
A highlight of the function was
the presentation' of a .$190 cheque
froni the Ontario Department of
Agrictilture to Barry McQuillan,
RR. 1,• Ludknow, for his champion'
shorthorn steer in the Queen's
Guineas competition tin§ year at
the Royal Winter Fair. The pres-
entation was made to. Barry by
the Live Stock Commissioner of
Ontario, W. P, Watson, Toronto.
• Veterinary .Trophy
In his speech Mr. Watson m-
inim:led the Juniors that -20 per-
cent of the farmers today share
in 60 percent of the returns from
agricultural products- and the oth-•
er 80 percent share the remaining
4Q percent of the returns. He
went on to explain that 4.H work
would prepare them for the fut-
ure no matter what occupation
they chose. Should it be agricul-
ture, they would have a better
chance of being among the 20 Per-
cent who share the large half of
the agricultural returns, Re was

association,
In welcoming the large number
to Achievement Night, G. .S/S7
Montgomery; agricultural repre-
sentative for the county, voiced
appreciation' to club members and
to the high percentage who com-
pleted projects, to the parents, to
the club leaders and to the press,
radio and television.
For the assistant agricultural
representative, Arthur S. Bolton,
it was the end of a successful
year's work, as he directed the
593 club projects which commen-
ced last March, and which had a
remarkably high completion: 84,5
percent.
Other special awards included
the Marvin Howe Trophy, donated
by Marvin Howe, MP, Wellington-
Huron, to Donald Lobb, RR 2,
Clinton, a member of the Bay-
field 4-H Swine Club, who earned
938 points out of a possible 1,000.
Thip is tile first year this trophy
has been presented, and will come
up for competition each year. It
will remain in the Lab home
throughout the following year,
and a replica will become Don-
ald's permanent property.
The Savauge Trophy, donated
by Ross Savauge, jeweller, Sea-
forth, went to Barry Watson, RR
2, Brussels, a _member of the
Brussels 4.H Swine Club, who had
the champion swine club guilt
shown in the counties of Huron
and Perth. W. It. Lobb, RR 2,
Clinton, president of the Huron
County. Hog Producers' Associat-
ion, made the presentation.
G. W. Montgomery, presented
the agricultural representatives
special cash award to David Kirk-
land, RR 3, Lucknow, for earning
the title of Grand Champion
Swine -Showman in 4-H Clubs in
1956.
The J. A. Anstett award, of an
automatic wrist watch, was pres-
ented by Miss Helen Johnston, (on
the staff of Anstett Jewellers in
Clinton), to Barry McQuillin, who
earned 959 points out of a possible
1,000 during the year as a mem-
ber of the Lucknow 4-H Calf
Club, winning top standing in 4-H
Beef Calf Club work in the coun-
ty.
A, Y, McLean presented the
Senator Golding Junior Showman-
ship trophy, which is donated by
the senator each year to the
Grand Champion Showman in
Huron County, this year won by
Gerald Wallis, RR 1, Granton,
member of the Exeter 4-H Beef
Calf Club,
The Huron Hereford Association
Past Presidents Trophy, donated
by Heber Eedy and George Ken-
nedy, was wan by Gerald Wallis,
for showing the Champion Here-
ford Calf in 1956 in Huron, Mr.
Kennedy made the presentation.
Miss Helen Johnston, presented
the Bank of Commerce award,
donated by the Blyth and Auburn
Branches, to Betty Storey, RR 2,
Seaforth, a member of the Sea-
forth 4-H Dairy Calf Club, who
earned' 957 points out of a possib-
le 1,000, thus obtaining the high-
est standing in Dairy Calf , work.
Betty 'also won the A. Y. Mc-
Lean Trophy, donated and pre-
sented by Mr. McLean, for being
Grand Champion Showman in 4-H
Dairy Calf Clubs.
The Harald Jackson Trophy,
donated by the auctioneer, Sea-
forth, was presented by Robert P.
Allan, to Neiman Cartwright, RR
1, Londesboro, for the champion
sample of oats exhibited by a
Huron 4-H Grain Club member.
William Turnbull presented the
Stratford District Yorshire Club
Showmen's canes to top members
in each of the swine clubs: Har-
mon Brodhagen, Brussels Club;
David Kirkland, Lucknow, Dun-

The Ontario Veterinary Assoc-
iation Trophy was presented by
Dr. C, A, V. Barker, RR 3, Sea-
fora Murray Gaunt, and David
Kirkland both of Lucknow, as the
livestock judging team with the
highest score in the judging of
beef cattle at the Royal Winter
Fair. Each of the three boys re-
ceived a replica of the trophy,
while the trophy itself remains in
the Department of Agriculture'

Awarded the distinction as Hur-
on County's ' "All-round" 4-H
member was Murray Dawson, RR
t, HensaIl, son of Mr. and Mrs.
Fted Dawson, who was awarded
the Elston Cardiff Citizenship
Trophy, by Mr. Cardiff, MP, Brus-
sels. Murray's award was based
not only on 4-H activities but al-
so home and community activit-
ies, He was a member of the
Exeter 4-H Beef Calf Club.
For the member with the high-
est 4-H score in the county, Barry
McQuillan, a member of the Luck-
now 4-H Calif Club, was the re-
cipient of the Tom Pryde Trophy
from its donor. He had a total
of 959 points out of a possible
1,000.
Novice Trophy
Gordon Baxter, No. 2, Goderich,
a member of the Goderich' 4-H
Corn Club, with 947 points, re-
ceived the Warden's Novice Tro-
phy from Warden John V. Fisch-
er, Turnberry Township, as the
first year 4-H Member with. the
highest score.
Patsy Marshall, daughter of Mr.
arid Mrs. Ross Marshall, Kirkton,
for the second consecutive year,
walked off with the Harvey C.
Johnston Trophy, awarded for the
highest 4-H score obtained by an
under 16-year-old member. A
member of the Eketer 4-H Dairy
Calf Club, as well as the Exeter
Kinsmen 4-H Poultry Club, Patsy
gathered 954 points in the Exeter
4-H Dairy Calf Club.

Allan, Brucefield, was chairman
of the evening, with a welcome
extended to the audience by Char-
les MacNaughton, chairman of the
high school board.
