L, Warner Payne Injured
L, Warner Payne, Listowel, who
was injured in the chest and .arms
when he stepped into the line of
fire of a shotgun, in a rabbit hunt
in Stanley Township near Bay-
field on December 26, is making
good progress towards recovery
and is expected to be able to leave
Scott Memorial Hospital, Seafprth,
this week. He is reported to have
climbed out of a gully just as an-
other hunter fired at a rabbit. He
was rushed to hospital where doc-
tors removed a .considerable nutty,.
ber of shotgun pellets. Mr. Payne
who is an engineer with the On.,
tario Department of Highways, is
on holidays and was spending the
Christmastide at the home of his
father-in-law, H, N, Brandon. Mrs,
Payne has been staying in Seaf-
orth to be near her husband, sin-
ce the accident.
Vire Burns Sugar Shanty
While passing the property be-
longing to Thomas M, and Gord-
on Westlake on Monday evening
about seven o'clock, Mr. Ginger-
ich saw flames, and noticing no
lights in the building, he crossed
the road to Gladwin Westlake's
home and turned in a fire alarm
which was promptly answered by
the Bayfield Fire Department.
Although unable to save the
18' x 20' sugar shanty, which was
ablaze, they did save the drive-
sh,ed which was only ten feet
fromit, and prevented spread to
the other near -by buildings.
The galvanized roof of the
shanty collapsed and hampered
fire -fighting operations, which
consumed 1,000 gallons of water.
The building housed all the maple
syrup making equipment, the
garden tractor, and welding out-
fit. Loss of equipment, which
was covered completely by in-
surance, was $1200. With no in-
surance on the building, this was
a complete loss.
The men had been welding in
the shanty in the morning, but
when they left had noticed noth-
ing wrong.
