WILLIAM JOHN DOWSON
(By our Bayfield correspondent)
Villagers were shocked on
Friday May 9, 1952, to learn of
the sudden death of William John
Dowson which occurred at his
home between two and three
o'clock in the afternoon, in his
83rd year.
He was found by .Albert Woods,
a next door neighbour, who from
his window observed him lying
on the ground near a bonfire. He
rushed over and finding that he
was unconscious went for help,
and medical aid was summoned.
The fire had spread into the
grass and it is thought that the
excitement of trying to extinguish
the blaze -aggravated a heart
condition from which he was suf-
fering, and that when the fatal
seizure came, he lay down on the
ground and passed away peace-
The deceased man was born on
the Goshen Line, Stanley Town-
ship, October 15, 1869, and was
the elder son of the late Sarah
Jane . Culver and Henry Dowson.
On April 4, 1895, he was united
in marriage to Agnes Jane Peck,
only daughter of the late Mary
Jane Rouatt and John Peck, Bay-
field, who survives him.
Following his marriage, he set-
tled in Hay Township until 1910
when he moved to a ranch in
Southern Alberta. In 1917 he
brought his family to Bayfield
and resided here for a few months
until he bought the home farm
on the Goshen Line. He retired
in 1938 and lived in Zurich for
two years before he bought the
residence on Clan Gregor Square
where he has been for the past
twelve years.
Mr. Dowson was known as a
