Eventually all ranks of the RCAF will participate in. a weekly "Current Affairs Hours". To assist the plan, a Bureau of Current Affairs has been organiz- ed within the Department of National Defence at Ottawa. All the graduates have com- pleted their first formal course in their RCAF training and now go to other units to begin the practical application of the basic theory of their trade learned at Clinton. In his address to the grad- uates, W/C Miller stressed the importance of each trade and the responsibilities of each individual in making the RCAF a highly competent military force. Clinton for the initial course are: S/L Ray Henderson, F/L Tommy Cook, F/0 Stan Kerr, F/0 Roy Lee, F/0 Howard Lochhead and P/0 Jack Penny. I It is the plan of these instruct- ors, who form the Current Affairs Committee at Clinton, to occas- ionally bring expert civilian lec- turers to address the officers on the course. I Last, Thursday an outstanding guest speaker, Dr. H. M. Thomas, Associate Professor, History De- partment, University of Western Ontario, spoke to the group on the subject "United States For- eign Policy." Weightlifters Successful In Competition The Southwestern Ontario Amateur Weightlifting Champion- ships were held at London YMCA on Friday evening last. A small contingent of weightlifters from RCAF, Clinton, competed and were quite successful even though none had ever competed before. The group was led by Sgt. Jack Varleau, British Empire Light- heavyweight Champion and Oly- mpic Games finalist who did not• compete but gave an exhibition of his skill. First to compete was AC1 George Goodwin who is in the bantamweight class (123 lbs.). Unfortunately he was the only competitor in this class and was not able to show his true ability against opposition. He made a total of 435 lbs, in the three Olympic type lifts. AC1 John Saliga was the next airman to compete. He did so in the Middleweight (165 lbs.) class. Against heed competition he broke all his previous personal records with a 180 lb. press, 190 lb. snatch, and 250 lb. jerk to total 620 lbs. He was second in this division. Sgt. Varleau, who opened the evening with a short 'talk on the sport, gave a virtuoso demon- stration of lifting. He demonstrat- ed the ultiinate in technique and skill. The climax came when he jerked 300 lbs. and showed it to be well below his limit by carry- ing it at arms length around the lifting platform. We wish him ail the best in the forthcoming Olympic Trials at Drummond- ville, Que, on Saturday, April 5. Cpl, Donald Ross took part in the Lightheavyweight (180. lbs.) contest, Because there were sev- eral outstanding lifters in this class he did not place but his total was 570 lbs.
