INSURANCE BATES Go UP. -As a 're-
sult of the Paris conflagration and other
fires that have visited the Province a
circular has been sent out by the Under-
writer's Association, raising the rates of
insurance on barns, stores, houses,
mercantile etock, ete. The rates govern
most insurance companies. By the new
regulations, Class "E" and "F," includ-
ing barns, store -houses, country stores,
etc., have been rated as follows: 1st
class -an advance from 75c, ou $100 of
property to $1.35; 2nd class, $1.50 as
against $5 cents formerly; 3rd class,
$1.75 as against 90c formerly and 'class
4, $3 against $1, Mercantile stock can-
not now be insured at less than 75 • cents
on $100, and the rate ou lumber has
been advanced 25c.

—While James Carr was at work in
Button & Fessant's factory on Thursday
last, he had the misfortune to run a
chisel through his left hand. He will
be laid cff work for a couple of weeks.
-A meeting of the W. C. T. U., will
be held in the I. O. F. hall, Chisholm
block on Tuesday afternoon next at 3.80
o'clock. A full attendance of members
is desired as special business is to 'be
transacted.
--A. H. Carr, of the market flour and
feed store has received this week a car
load of flour, 'a car load of shorts, and a
car load of bran. This is pretty good
for one week's importation for one flour
and feed merchant.
-The Goderich Star is complaining
because the cows in that town are using
the new sidewalks as resting spots. or
stables. We would think it was tine
Goderich was up-to-date and have a by-
law prohibiting cows running at large,
