A FAIR REDISTRIBUTION.
In a speech delivered at Ottawa
the other night,Mr. Bennett,M. P. for'
East &mem, said: -"If the Conserva-
tive members of the House of
Commons held the same opinion on
their tedistribution bill as he did
they would be prepared to besome
summer residents of Ottawa for the
purpose of fighting to a finish this in-
iquitous measure. Never was there
a more abominable bill proposed,
but little else was to no expected
from the Government. The propos-
ed measure would be one so unfair
that, if carried, the Conservative
party would not only, be practically
wiped out of existanee, but the in-
terests of the cauntry would be
seriously imperilled."
It is by such criticism as this says
the Toronto Globe that the Opposition
are utterly discrediting themselves
in the country. The redistribution
_bill has not yet been laid before
Parliament, and Mr. Bennet can
know nothing of its character. If
the bill proves to be of such charact-
er as he recklessly forecasts, then he
and his fellow-Oppositionists will be
quite justified in fighting it all sum-
mer. The country 13 sick Of gerry-
mandering, and of all such unfair
devices to gag public opinion and
crueify Parliamentary Oppositions.
The country demands (I) that the
outrageous gerrymander of 1882
shall be recitified, and (2) that con-
stituencies shall be restributed with
a scrupulous regard for fair play
and within the Dees of the municipal
counties. A gerrymander wonld do
the Liberal Government infinite
harm. A fair redistribution it is
bound to make. The crowning in-
justice of 1882 it must be abolished.
