Snowmobiles, like cars,
can't be driven just any-
where. The Motorized Snow
Vehicles •Act, has, established
a number of guidelines snow-
mobile owners must follow.
For example, knowingly or
unknowingly trespassing on
land while operating a snow-
mobile makes the driver
guilty of an offence, and on
summary conviction, . ,he
could be liable to' a fine not
exceeding ..$500. _
Permission to operate a
snowmobile on land other
than your own must be
obtained in writing, other-
wise' you, could face a tres-
passing charge.
The owner or occupier of
land owes no duty of care
toward anyone driving or
riding on a snowmobile or
being towed by one, if the
driver or rider is trespassing.
The only duty the owner-
occupier does have is not to
create danger for snow-
mobilers with the deliberate
Wept- of doing harm or
damage to the trespasser.
LI4BILITY
If someone else borrOws
your snowmobile, with your
consent, then you are jointly
liable for any damages re-
specting damage and injury
resulting from the operation
of the vehicle or for penalties
for any breach of municipal
or provincial bylaws _or re-
gulations regarding
motorized snow vehicles.
Also, anyone driving a
snowmobile on a highway or
public trail must produce
evidence that he is insured
under a motor vehicle
liability policy.
HELMETS
Helmets must be worn not
only by the driver of a
snowmobile, but also' .by
passengers and by anyone
being towed behind a snow-
mobile on a cutter, toboggan
or sled. Helmets must
comply' with the same
standards established for
Motorcycle, helmets..
' TOW BARS
If a snowmobile operator is
going to tow a cutter or
toboggan behind this
machine, he must use a rigid
tow-bar. Towing is pro-
hibited on a serviced road-
way, except to cross the road
at. a -90-degree angle, -
This rule doesn't apply to a
snowmobile which is being
used to free a stuck vehicle or
conveyance or for an
emergency rescue or trail
maintenance.
Snowmobile drivers who
must use the highway are
used to be particularly care-
ful on ice, packed snow or
dry roads since the vehicle's
steering and braking systems
aren't designed for this kind
against which common /sense
precautions should be taken.
Christmas decorations re-
of use,
Also, snowmobile drivers
must drive defensively, since
snowmobiles are smaller
than most vehicles on the
highway and can't be seen as
easily.
Also, the rules of the road.
apply to snowmobile drivers
the same as anyone else
using a public highway.
present a wide range of
safety hazards. :Take those
twenty or thirty year old
strings of lights, for
example, Even if they, have
been carefully stored under
ideal conditions' - and often
they aren't - the insulation
may be frayed or rotted and
sockets defective or loose.
Inspect your light strings
carefully. Minor problems
can often be treated with
electrical tape; but, when in
doubt, don't use them.
*And some of those older
Christmas balls for the tree
shatter,easily into very sharp'
fragments, Don't let small
children handle them,
*If you are stringing out-
door lights, remember that
electrical connections ex-
posed to rain or snow can be
dangerous. And don't use
"indoor" lights outdoors.
*In selecting a Christmas
tree, test the needles to
determine freshness by
bending them; if they snap
readily, don't buy.
• *Don't position your tree
next to a radiator or forced-
air heat vent.
*Larger trees are often too
heavy for standard metal
stands; for safety's sake, run
two or three thin wires to _ "wills or woodwork to prevent
tipping. g
*If you buy a tree early,
keep it outside until you are
ready to decorate it. If
possible, keep the base of the
trunk in water.
*Use 'a metal tree stand
that permits your • giving
water to the tree - and check
the level daily; you'll be
amazed at how quickly your
tree absorbs water,•
*Don't leave thristmas
tree lights or.outdoor lights
on,when you leave thp house.
It's best to unplug them, but
not by pulling on the cord.
*Mistletoe, holly and ever-
greens can all be poisonous
to inquisitive children. Use
them ca fully in place's
children cAift possible reach.
---gKiiifif"you are using live
evergreens, .as mantle de-
corations, make sure they are
fresh and securelpfastened.

Remeinber too that there
are added holiday dangers on
the streets and in shops, as
well as in the home, Crowded
streeiraild crowded store-s-
are ideal fort pickpockets and •
purse snatchers. Men should
avoid carrying their wallets
in hip pockets. And, if they
remove their jackets in a
store to try on a suit or sports
jacket;' they should re-
member ' to transfer their
wallet. Never leave it in a
dressing cubicle,
Similarly, ladies should
never set their pocketbooks
down on a store counter. A
quick thief can grab it and be
gone in seconds. And re-
memBW-SITIngifters don't
always steal Merchandise off
the counters and racks; your
nicely wrapped packages aro'
even easier to snatch and
take out past electrohic de-
vices, guards..or detectives, If
possible, carry packages in
large shopping ,bags with
strong handles firmly held.
Finally, don't announce
holiday vacation plans in
your' local newspaper. Set
lights on timers if you are
going away, stop deliveries,
and have a neighbour check
your house regularly.
And, raYs Pinkertoia-
having taken all these pre-
cautions, try to relax with
increased peace-of-mind and
enjoy the holiday season.

A new and 'exciting history
of • the Canada Company
which is being published
jointly by the County of Perth
and Cumming Publishing,
Stratford, will be available in
January 1979.
This covers the early story
of Guelph and. Guelph Town-
ship, The Huron Tract and
, scattered Crown Land lots
across Southern Ontario from.
Windsor to Ottawa.
The book tells mainly the
founding of the Company. in
1824, establishment of early
settlements, building The
Huron Road and the gradual
• introduction of self govern-
. ' ment which reduced the
authority of C; qada Com-
pany officials posted• either• in
Goderich or Toronto.
The troubles of commis-
sioners and likewise those
of ..settlers which were
complicated by poor 'com-
munications •are set out.
In spite of complaints by
. certain settlers, The Canada
St. John Ambulance re-
minds you, that the safe way
to deal with frostbite is to
warm tote' affected area
gradually with body heat.
Put the hands* or feet of the
victim inside your jacket and
under your armpits. Do not
-rub and do not rub with
snow. Do not direct heat.
