With the modern empha-
.sis on gift-giving and party-
ing at Christmastime, it's no
wonder youngsters and
adults alike tend to forget
what the.season is really all
about. There are many ways
a family can attempt to put
renewed emphasis on
Christmas as a celebration
of the coming of the Savior,
however.
One charming custom
you Can initiate in your own
family circle is the making
of a Jesse Tree during Ad-
vent, the four weeks before
Christmas. This, tree is
named after the ancestor of
Jesus because of the Old
Testament verse: "And in
that day there shall be a root
of Jesse, which shall stand
for an ensign of the people;
to it shall the Gentiles seek;
and his rest shall be
glorious.” (Isaiah 11:10)
A small tree or large
branches can symbolize the
root of Jesse from whence
the Christ Child came. Have

construction paper, to be
hung on the Jesse Tree
Appropriate symbols for
your Jesse Tree could be a
crown or six-pointed star to
represent David, tablets
symbolizing the Ten Com-
mandments, an ark to rep-
resent Noah, an apple sym-
bolizing Adam and Eve's
sin, a rose to represent the
mother of Jesus, and a sun
to symbolize Jesus,-the light
of the world.
Read portions of the Old
Testament to the young-
sters before they create their.
Jesse Tree symbols. This
will help them to under-
stand what the symbols
mean and also help them
understand the history of
God's people.

There is melody in the air,
resounding in song. Christ-
mas is the perfect time for
musical expression! Many
popular holiday songs were
originally written to impart
the knowledge of the birth of
Jesus and the meaning and
merriment of Christinas.
These songs became known
as -"carols," derived from
the French word "carole,"
meaning round cinnre Early
carols were simple songs
with primitive dance ac-
companiment.
The first, documented
American Christmas carol
is thought to have been writ-
ten for the Huron Indians by
St. John Brebeuf, a French
missionary. This carol, now
translated to English, re-
mains part of Christmas
song and dance in modern
Quebec, Canada.
The custom of Christmas
caroling, dates back to the
16th century when singing
groups traveled from home
to home, wishing friends and
neighbors the best of the
season. Though greeting
cards 'have replaced the
necessity of in-person greet-
ings, the tradition of door:
to = door Caroling is still
widely practiced today.
Group singing is now in-
cluded in religious and other
services — emphasizing the
importance of Chriitmas
carols
Most of us would agree
that Christmas and the
whole world is brighter and
more meaningful when
=Sid is used to express the
beauty of this holy and
happy Yuletide season.
