The insulating. Methods
we used were chosen with
comfort more than cost in
mind. For example, we put
in triple-glazed sealed
thermal windows to replace
double sliding glass
windows. It is doubtful that
we will recover our costs
through the savings in fuel
for a few years, but the day
comes closer, every time
fuel costa go up:
Our guide to insulating
was the federal Govern-
ment's publication, "Keep-
ing the Heat In" published
by the federal Department
of Energy, Mines and
ReSources. It contains
dozens of tips on how tp
insulate -- in walls, attics,
roofs and around doors and
windows, as Well as how to
hire a contractor, or how to
do the job yourself.
In our case, we decided
to hire a contractor and
concentrate on blowing
insulation into the walls,
insulating the attic (which
already had some insul-
ation), and replacing the
double sliding glass
windows with sealed ther.
mal windows.

Dale Erb, an abattoir employee, said while
the plant was "badly messed up", nothing
was touched in either the freezers or coolers.
The staff of the abattoir were notified abou
the break-in at about 9;30 p.m. when they
were attending their staff Christmas party.
After leaving the abattoir, the three
suspects used the knives to slash a number
of tires, both in the downtown area of
fiensall and at the Hensall and District
Community Centre, where a hockey tourna-
building has too much heat as temperatures
there often rise to 78° or 80° F.
When a Union Gas representative investi-
gated the situation this fall, he found the
furnace was operating at only 30 per cent of
its efficiency due to an inadequate return
line.
At the Oct. 9th meeting of council,
councillors authorized clerk Jim Crocker to
have an adequate return line installed in the
library furnace.
Mr. Crocker said he contacted Larry
Lebeau, who operates Lebeau Plumbing and
Heating Ltd. in Goderich and Mr. Lebeau
said he would send someone out to the
library on October 25.
Mr. Crocker alerted both the library staff
and the nursery school teachers that the
repairman Would be working at the library

She said the staff wear double sweaters
and leotards under the slacks in order to
keep warm. On the chilliest days, they wear
their coats as well. Mrs. Broome said the
library was so cold a few times two winters
ago, that it had to be closed temporarily.
Seaforth Co-op Nursery, in the basement
of the library, faces the opposite problem.
Joanne Holland, teacher at the school,
comes in early in the morning •and turns the
furnace off before the children arrive. If she
didn't do this, the clasSroom would be too
hot for the children.
Mrs. Holland said the furnace wasn't
working last year either and "It's definitely
not any better now."
Mr. Crocker said on Wednesday, Mr.
LeBeau had called him to say he would be
making repairs on the library's heating
system on December 6.

The special feeling of
warmth you get when you
insultate hour house may
come not only from the fact
that you are cutting up to
25 per cent off your fuel
bill, but you are saving
precious natural 'resources
as well.
You may well be skep-
tical about claims that are
made for fuel savings
through insulation. I
believed it only after doing
a thorough insulating job
on your own 17-year-old-
quir-bedroom house.
17-year-old-

We had kept records of
our gas consumption for
several years and in a
three-year period covering
the October-April home
heatiri season from
1973- 1975-76, we used
an a er ge of 148,000
cubic t of gas each
,win er. .
Last winter, following the
insulation job -- which was
staged over a two-year
period -- our consumption
was only 110,500 cubic
feet. And that was during
a winter that the gas
company said was much
colder, than usual. Precisely
our fuel saving over the
three-year average was
25.73 per cent although, as
I. said, our daughter's
'departure for a place of her
own might have accounted
for about one-fifth of that.
