• Warble Control Deadline .
Farmers are reminded that the use of
systemics to control warbles is not recom-
mended during the months of December,
January and February. During this period
the grub's are located primarily in the gullet
or spinal cord areas. Grubs killed in this
area stimulate the animal's body defences
and undesired side effects can occur.
These side effects may include inflam-
mation of the gullet or esophagus, re-
sulting in bloating or excessive salivation,
or a stiffness and paralysis 'in the hind
quarters. In severe cases death can result.

By: Dr. Ted Rothmel, Assoc. Ag. Rep.
Barry Sinclair, Assoc. Ag. Rep,
If Fat Test Is low, it could be your Feed
Rations that lack sufficient fibre in
proper physical form are the.usual cause of
a drop in milk fat. Length and coarseness
of the fibre are also very important,. ,
Following are some conditiong which
may cause problems:
1. Forage chopped too fine. Rations
relying heavily on finely chopped forage
may not meet all of therequirements for
normal rumen function.
2. Too much corn in the ration--more
corn silage and H.M.S.C. are being fed,
resulting in cows getting less fibre. When
either dry or H.M. corn is fed with the cob,
cows are made to eat the cob which is, a
good source' of fibre--8% as compared to
2% in shelled corn.
3. Feeding schedule: When cows are
allowed to fill up on concentrates before
hay or silage is fed, not enough of the
forage may '0 eaten for normal rumen
function.
4. Pelleted grain .mixes - The heat and
pressure produced in pelleting can alter
the soluble starch in ways that affect
rumen function and thus reduce fat test by
0.1% to 0.2%.
. Prevention,:
1. Feed at least 1 to 1'4 lbs. hay `or hay
equivalent/100 lbs, body weight.
2. Feed adequate amounts of forage
each day before giving cows large amounts
of concentrates.
3. Make sure cows aren't getting too
much corn. It has only 2% fibre and could
displace higher fibre feeds in your ration
and thus reduce the total fibre consumed.
INHERITED 'ABNORMALITIES
IN SWINE
The characteristics or physical make-up
of an animal is the result of a combination
of genes. This combination of genes
contributes to the bad traits of an animal as
well as the good traits. When selecting
breeding stock, swine producers place '
emphasis on highly economic traits such as
backfat, growth rate, etc., and sometimes
overlook the abnormal traits that are
heritable.
The following are some of the more
common abnormalities which can result in
econom'c losses to the producer:
1. Afre Aril (no anal opening);
2 Crypt rchidism (Ridglings) 3. Hernias--
Scrotal and Umbillical 4. Blind and in-
verted nipples; 5. Hermaphrodites (sexual
organs of male & female) and 6. Small
inside toes.
When the abnormality is inherited the
gene causing it to show up may he
recessive or dominant. If the gene is
dominant the condition will show up
readily and selection against it is possible.
If the gene is recessive the condition
doesn't show up as often, however, the
animal can still be a 'carrier. Breeders
should be aware of these abnormalities and,
take measures to keep them at a low, level
within their herd. This can be achieved by
not selecting any animal for breeding
