TQR, No96ivaig,R 23, 1978 Nursery school tours fire hall When you mix children and a .fire station, the reaction is instant delight. This was evident last week when the children from Hensall Nursery School dropped in to tour the Hensall fire station on Thursday morning. Fire chief Jim Hyde wisely didn't waste any time explaining the intricacies of a volunteer fire department to the kids - instead he and fireman Gary Maxwell passed around firemen's hats and let the children scramble over the fire trucks to their hearts' content. It was soon obvious whicbof the four fire department trucks proved the most popu- lar. Hensall's antique 1926 truck, which has been on loan to the Goderich Pioneer Museum until recently, won hands down. Not only, was the truck, far smaller than today's fire engines, built a little closer to the ground, so the children could scramble on and off with ease, but also, the truck had a siren that the kids could actually operate. The kids cranked away at the old fashioned siren, which produced a dull whine, while mothers and helpers tried to keep an eye on the mittens and hats that were tossed aside in the excitement. All in all, the visit to the fire station was undoubtedly an unqualified success!
