shame.-.:that one of Canada's most productive
basic industries should he hovering on the verge of
bankruptcy constantly, Not long ago, some statistics
were released by the department of agriculture and
food which indicated more than 50 per cent of all farm-
ers in this prOvince are forced to hold down. two jobs.
They become school bus dri'vers, janitors, part-time
welders, snowblower operators, truck drivers—or wha-
tever they can find .to stay in on the farm.
Are there too many farmers'? Should the nation sit
back and let natural .attrition weed them out?
Personally, f think it would be a disastrous mistake.
No other business in the world is as efficient as a fam-
ily farm. No other unit is as closely-knit.
What's the answer? For starters, this country could
help farmers by some protective tariffs, The trade defi-
cit continues to mount. Fruit and vegetable growers
are hard hit. •
. The. only agricultural cc nudity where Canada has
a net balance - is in grai wheat notably. Some. trade
barriers in other area.'ould• give farmers more' confi-
dence. Other nation aye done it. The European Econ-
omic mmunity 'as made it :almost impossible for the
rest of .t wo to compete with those nations in agri
culture.
Longer term loans with 'lower interest rates would
help. Some tax relief, especially for young people going
into business, is another idea that could be pursued.
Not being an economist, I can't give ideas on financ-
ing but much could be done to encourage the farmer.
When big corporations take over agriculture, prices
.for food will• go so high we'll end up existing instead of
living.
Farming is a precarious buSiness.
Ask the farniers,. They'll tell you that, in spite, of
higher returns at the farm gate this year, hundreds of
young men who started farming the last five to 10 years
are getting out._ • •••-,• ••
They are being forced out.
Will Carleton:one,4 many earthy philosophers pro-
duced in North America a century ago, said it suc-
cinctly: Worm or beetle, drought or tempest, on 'a farm-
er's land may fall. Each is loaded full o' ruin, but a
mortgage beats 'em all.
Too many young men are now reaping a bitter har-
vest of broken dreams and disappointments.
These , people planted huge investments several
years ago. They came fresh from agricultural schools,
bright and full of hope for the future.
To echo Will Carleton's,pluases, farming has always
been precarious in this century. The exodus has been
steady for 75 years. No one will ever Know the amount
of help given to the industrial work firce by those who
left the farm for the cities.
In 1940, Canada had more than three million fartri
ers. By 1-970. only -eight years ago, the number dropped
to 1.4 million, a fantastic exodus.
- It's cash flow that is killing them.
Debts are simply too large to survive any sharp de-
cline in profits. The Ontario Federation of Agriculture,
probably the best organization in the province to speak
for farmers. has estimated net profits for farmers have
fallen by 42 per cent since 1976.
It depends. of course, on the type of operation: If
you're a corn grower, the crunch began in• 1976 when
prices slumped to $2 a bushel. If you started when you
figured on 1450, a bushel and you end up getting $2 a .
bushel, you ran imagine the explaining necessary to
convince your-banker to keep going.
Beef farmers were hit even harder..They have been

Ontario farmers don't have
to get the 'short end' when it
comes to knowing the latest
production techniques. They
can, attend short courses at
the Centralia College of
Agricultural Technology.
Fifteen agricultural shdrt
courses will be offered at the
college in early 1979, says
Doug Jamieson, short course
coordinator. All but three are
one day long.
" "We hope that a farmer.
might learn enough in the
one day ta pay for his day
away from the farm. the cost.
of the course, and even his
gas.
The short courses '.
scheduled from Jagnuary until
April, cost $4.00 per day.
They are aimed at profes-
sional fartnefs, farm em-
ployees, and novice farm-
ers. Instructors will come
from agricultural colleges,
government, and farrn-re-
lated industries.
Courses will coven four
main subject areas-livestock,
farm management, engine-
ering, and soils and crops.
Seven of the 15 courses are
new, says Mr. Jamieson.
New topics • include white
beans, '-'seed pioduction,
transferring e farm assets,
basicd pork production, 'and
alternative ' energy sources
for farms.
Some of last year's of-
ferings will be back again—
farm income tax, sow, herd
management, beef feedlot
management, and cutting•
farm energy costs.
To register, farmers
should contact county offices
of the Ministry of Agriculture
and Food, or Mr. D. Jamie-
son at Centralia College of
Agricultural Technology,
Huron Park, Ontario NOM
1YO. His telephone number
is (519) 228-6691.
"Last year, 463 people
attended our short courses;
more than half had not taken
a course previously at.
Central ia. We expect about
550 this year.
People from as far away
Padf:bortAtkh have' at-
tended, so we draw from the
whole farming population of
southern Ontario."
