Honourable Frank Miller
made these announcements
in his maiden speech in the
Legislature as Provincial
Treasurer. He stated that
"Ontario's spending' re-
. straints must be coupled with
initiatives designed to
encottrage the private sector
to accelerate its own expan-
sion.
You will recall that the
land speculation tax was
introduced' in April 1974 in
an effort to bring some order
into the real estate market.
Widespread speculation had
imposed enormous pressure
an land prices. At the outset.
the tax was set at 50 per cent
of profit made' on the par-
• chase and sale of land which
had not beep Substantially
4improved. However, it was
• - subsequently dropped to 20
per cent, The province had
expected to earn some .$7
million from the tax in 1978:
79, The Liberals supported
the government's decision to
abolish the ,tax. "I think irs
served its purpose", said our
finance critic David Peterson
(London Centre). It's re-
moval is considered to be
part of an effort to '"set a
decent investment climate in
the ptovinee."
Under questioning from
the Opposition, the Treas-
urer has disclosed that the
Ontario Government's
spending deficit has climbed
to $1.48 billion this , year,
almost 41 per cent higher
than forecast in the 1978/79
budget: He has also aband-
oned the promis made by
frorner a rer Darcy
McKeough in 1977 tb oat-
ance the budget by 1981.
That is "an unrealistic date"
he said. However, he
w hen to set a new, target when he
learns the impact of the
federal budget, to be tabled
next month.
Both Opposition Parties
attacked' the government
Over its handling of the
economy: Stuatt Smith
emphasised the fact that the
government is now paying
$3,3 million a day in interest
a lone. Liberal finance critic
David . Peterson ' said the
Treasurer should not have
used federal figures to pre-
-diet income tax revenues,
because these have been
incorrect for the past few
years.
The Government has

information on new religious

and the "deprograinmers",
who claim to save people

cing the appointment, the
Attorney-General said that
,'after a thorough review of
all ' available information"
Dr. Hill will "recommend
whether it would be in the
public interest to establish a
further public inquiry in this
area' or to take further
action." This is not a public
-inquiry. Dr. Hill will not hear
evidence. He will only gather
and assess what is on the
written record. Initially, the ,
government seemed pre-
pared' 'to go ahead on the
basis of a submission to
cabinet from the Attorney-,
General's department - a
submission based on a police
report which suggested a
public inquiry to educate
people about the dangers of
involvement in some of these
gtoups. The ,intention was to
follow the inquiry up with
legislation which would block

Liberal Justice Critic
Margaret Campbell has
accpsed the government of
hiding behind the cloak of
the courts to avoid answering
embarrassing questions.
However, the Attorney.
General maintains that .the
governdient is only following
the rules agreed, upon by all
three parties.
Speaking in the debates of
