Adert k an agricultural
deve opulent project in
Sierra Leone in co-operation
with the World University
Service. of Canada (WUSC).
OFA's share was to "sponsor
a farm manager to imp.e dent
and administer a poultry
farm and hatchery there.
Roland Stalker of Bath, Ont.
was selected and went to the
site.
After spending several
weeks, there Mr. Stalker was
of the opinion that consider-
able additional funds were
required to repair machinery
and purchase corn for live-
stock feed if the project was
to be a success. He returned
to Canada apd,a presentation
was' made to the Canadian
International Development
Agency. (CIDA) through
WUSC and an additional
$70,000 was received.
Mr. Stalker did not return
to Africa, as a suitable
replacement was 'found who
already was on the continent
under the employment of
another aid organization. On
last report (July 1978) the
project was well under;vay.
All major structures for the
poultry operation (parent
breeding house, rearing
house, hatchery building,
feed store and ancillary ser-
vice buildings) were com-
pleted. A new incubator was
installed last May and the
first batch of eggs were
expectcdto hatch in Aug-
ust or September. The hatch-
ing of chickens domestically
is a great step forward as
currently day-old chicks are
imported froth Europe at a
considerable expense.
As a result farmers in
Sierra Leone will be able to
increase their flocks eco-
nomically and the country's
serious shortage of protein
for human consumption can
bg lessened.
In light of the completion
of the. Foreign Aid commit-
tee's initial undertaking the
committee has decided to
terminate it's commitment to
WUSC. The, project has in-
curred an expense of $10,000
on the OFA sionsored farm-
manager's account, About
$7500 has already been
raised but the Foreign Aid
Committee would like to
clean up its deficit by the end
of November. The Perth
Federation donated the $25
hoping that if each county
federation in the province
follows suit then the project
bill can be paid by OFA
