Smith Memorial Trophy for having the highest overall average In the school by John Henderson, of the Huron' County board of education, at last Friday's graduation ceremonies at the school, (Photo by Oke) THE SPEECH MAKERS --- Deb Rose and Gayle Vander Velden were the Grade 13 ,and 'Grade 12 valedictorians at last Friday's graduation ceremonies at Seaforth District High School and both girls recalled some of the more humorous highlights of their year as students. It was obvious at Friday's"' commencement exercises for Seaforth District High School graduates that the school's students aren't letting the bleak employment picture fieep them from pursuing' a variety of careers. ' The graduates have enrol- led in everything from nuring programs to early childhood education programs. an agricultural program and a data processing course. Three of Grade 13 have already found ., employment and a fourth is still job hunting in London. As Deb Rose, the Grade 13 valedictorian said, in her speech, she expects to see her fellow grp.duates in care- ers as diverse as' a' sports announcer to a demolition derby driver. • Bruce,Shaw, the school's principal also used -his opening remarks to assure the .graduates while there may be a possible bleak looking employment• outlook now, the experts say by 1992 there should pe jobs avail- able. Deb Rose, of R.R.4, SeafOrth, the Grade 13 valedictorian, was the top award winner Friday evening. In addition to being named one of the school's three Ontario scholars, she was awarded the .$100 Elizabeth Scott bursary. given to students with high averages who are furthering their education beyond high school and the awards for the highest Grade 13 marks in English, biology and physics.. Miss Rose is studying at the University of Western 'Ontario. Top Marks Linda Dorssers, R.R.4, Seaforth, another Ontario scholar, won an award for the top marks in Math Ilrand (the Alumni Memorial Award, which is given 'to the graduating student Who has shown academic excellence in his or her years ,at the school: Miss Dorssers is now employed with London Life. Dianne Oldfield, R.R.4, Seaforth, the third Ontario Scholar, was awarded an Elizabeth Scott bursary and awards for the highest marks in 'French and accounting. Miss Oldfield is continuing her studies at Western. Kathy Whitely of Seaforth won an award 'for highest marks in English II, as did 'Nancy Dietz of .R.R.4, Seaforth and Miss Whiteley receive& a bursary from the Ladies Auxiliary, Branch 156 of the Royal Canadian Legion. NancyDietz is apprenticing' as a photographer in Hensall and Miss Whitely is studying data processing atConestoga College. Anne Albert, R.R.4, Seaforth, won an Elizabeth Scott bursary, the Math I award for the highest marks and a Ralph Whitmore mem- orial award. The Ralph Whit- more award is given to the students who has increased their average the most over a given year. Nursing Miss Ablert is studying nursing at Fashawe College. Clare Devereaux, Seaforth received an Elizabeth Scott bursary and the award for the highest marks' in Grade 13 geography. She is now studying at U.W:O. Paul McClure, R.R.1, Seaforth received 'an Elizabeth Scott btirsary an the award for the high marks in Math II. Mr. McClure is studying engineering at the University of Waterloo. Other Elizabeth Scott bursary recipients were Christine Carter, R.R.2, Seaforth, who is studying at Lambton College, Sarnia and Debbie Van Vliet, Brussels, studying nursing at Fanshawe College. Other awards were pre- sented to Donna Henderson, R.R.5, Seaforth, who re- ceived the citizenship award presented by the students' council; John Webet:, R.R. 2, Brussels who received an award for the highest marks in Chemistry. Dale Parsons R.R.1, Hensall highest marks in Grade 13 history; Brian Lee, Seaforth, the highest marks for law and Linda Heard, Harpurhey, the highest marks for family studies. Highest Marks Dianne Smith of Egmond- vale, a Grade 13 student at the school. received the award for the highest marks in German. Paul• Bode, Seaforth, re- ceived the award for the highest marks in physical education; Patricia Menhe- u-e, of R.R.4, Seaforth re- ceived an award for Year 4 mily studies. and Charles Stewart of Harpurhey re- ceived the Ralph Haney Memorial Award. The C.M. Smith Memorial Trophyforthe highest aver - age Marks throughout the school was presented to Kathy Caldwell of Egmond- ville. Sean Duffin, R.11.1, Wal- ton received a bursary from the Royal Canadian Legion. Seaforth, Branch' No. 156, presented annually to the children of *veterans. Sandra Ruston and Mary Jean Salisbury, both of Seaforth, received SDHS staff bursaries. Karen Bruxer of Dublin re- ceived a bursary from the Women's Auxiliary of the Seaforth Community Hospital. , . The Leeming Memorial Scholarships, presented to students who achieve the highest marks in their par- ticular grade, were awarded to Paul Ellis, Year 1: Mary Verberne and Mary Jane Visser, Year 2: Kathy Cald- well, Year 3: and Dianne Smith, Year 4. John Scott of . Seaforth received the Susan and Bertha Ross scholarship.
