proper moisture levels. The
recommended range for high
moisture corn is 25.32% and
30-37% for high moisture ear
corn.
Harvesting losses can also
be reduced ' significantly if
carried out at the proper
moisture level. Tests •have
indicated an 8.6 bu/acre
harvesting loss from corn at

becomes too dry.
If shelled corn is to be
stored in a sealed silo with a
bottom unloader, it is best in
the whole kernel form with

corn, stored in an open silo
with a top ,unloader, should

Next year's corn rootworm
cnntrol„ Can start now by
recording fields that have a
high adult count,. Adult corn
rootworm lay their eggs in
August and September.. Any
fields that have high adult
counts now should have a
rootworm control next year.
Adults of this insect eat corn
silks so that it is , easy to
identify fields that have high
adult numbers. Any field
that has a noticeable number
,of cobs Without silks has high
adult numbers. .
This silk detection can be
done from a tractor or
,combine seat while harvest-
ing. These observations
should be recorded since our
memory is seldOrn as goad as
wethink it is, Corn rootworm
can be controlled by rotating
with another crop or by
applying an insecticide . at
planting.

M i during the past year,
Weed control in 1978 was
paabably the poorest in the
seventies. Part of this is due
to weather but the main part
is due to management. In
other• words, most of these
weeds can be controlled and
they are identified, if the
right herbicide is used at the
proper rate and time. •

but we Can start now on the
1979 crop by identifying
weed problems now .and
recording these problems.
One thing is certain, many
fields have weeds going to
seed this year. These seeds

more money next year. In
fact, it will take 2 or 3 years
of excellent weed cpntrdl to
effectively reduce the num-
ber of weed. seeds that are
