said one
problem facing the recreation
department is that coaches
are getting scared off because
they. carry the whole load.
The recreation director
said the coaches are abused.
so they quit. The problem is.
"We're losing our numbers
and not picking up replace-
ments," 'he said.
The recreation director
said many parents seem, to
feel once they've registered
their child for a sport, they
have nothing else to do.
This summer, there was a
serious problem in locating
baseball coaches for travel-
ling teams and the house
leagues, teams which
compete among themselves
in Seaforth.
The recreation director
speculates there isn't the
interest in the house league—
teams since these• teams
aren't as competitive as
others. Also, often the house
leagues are made up of
athleteswho didn't qualify for
the teams which travel out of
town When it comes to supporf-
ing a team, coaches hear any-'
number of excuses.
With soccer . games,
parents often exctise them-
selves from getting involved
by saying they really don't
know too much about the
game.
Mr. Buist said teams have
"their real loyal supporters"
who fallow-the...kids around
but unless thete are a few
more 'loyal supporters it
"makes it tough on the
teams" who may feel their
efforts aren't of much interest
to anyone else.
.Eugene Todd, who
coached a bantam baseball
team this summer, is one
coach who found the same
people. • provided all the
support.
He said two or three
?eople were 'doing 'the driv-
ing all the time, and often the
Referee clinic
Seaforth will be hosting an
0,M.H.A. Level 1 Referees
Clinic this year on Tues. Oct.
24. '
The clinic is' for anybody
who is interested in obtain-
ing their referees card which
entitles them to officiate
minor league games. The'
Minor Hockey Association is
very short of offcials this year
and they urge anyone
interested to attend. The
clinic is approximately 3%
hours in length, 2 hr. of
office instruction and PA
hours on the ice. Cost of the
clinic is $4.00 per person and
all interested persons must
register at the recreation
office prior to the clinic.
same few parents showed up
for the games.
' Reta Core is another
assistant coach who's seen
the parents' lack of enthusiasm
first hand.
Mrs, core helped coach a
baseball team with boys aged
six to eight years old this
summer, esien though she
would rather have been
involved with the team her
own children played on.
She said the reason she's '
helping with the younger age
group is simply that the
coach couldn't get enough
people to help out.
She said there were lots
of nights when' no one was
watching the. team play,
which is "kiii'da sad" since
the children like to have their
parents watch them in action
Mrs. Core said mothers
tended to drop off their
children before the gam; and
pick them up again at the end
of the game.
The lack of enthusiasm
was soon reflected in the
players' attitudes and some
evenings only four members
of a teamwould show up for a
game, so the coaches had to
combine two teams to make
up the numbers.
Mrs. Core said when the
T-ball tournament was being
held. 12 playerswent home
with notes, but only seven
Players brought notes back
saying they were interested
in the tournament.
Dr. Bob Friendship, who
coached Seaforth Pee Wees,
WOA A class D champions,
said he went to the minor
le ague baseball organ-
izational meeting simply to
offer to help out with the
games.
When only four people
showed up for the meeting,
Dr.' Friendship ended up
coaching the team.
He said although there
were 13 team members, the
same mother drove team
members to practibally all
their games.
He 'said the team shared
one batting helmet and
played with tattered old
jerseys. ' which contrasted
sharply with the new uni-
forms worn by members of
the Wingham team which the
Seaforth team defeated in
the W,O.A.A. finals.
The coach said support, of
the Pee Wees "hasn't been
too good" and pointed out
during a playoff match
against Clinton, only one
mother showed up to watch.
She was the same mother
who drove the players to
games.
Dr. Friendship praised his
assistant coach, 17 year old
Dick Dale, who. took over
coaching duties when Dr.
Friendship was on holidays
and whenever his work made
him late for a game.
Next year, Dr. friendstv
may not volunteer his service
again. Coaching the team'
involves two games a week
and one practice which in-
volves a fair amount of time.
