(Expositor Photo) On Sunday, the kiln was fired after each of'. the potters completed a .numberof pieces ',of" stoneware. Clay for stoneware pottery 'must be imported since the clay indigenous to this part of Ontario' is earthenware- clay. The three local potters at the working seminar were Rob Tetu and Addy McPhee of Beechwbod Pottery and Barbara Alkemade of Seaforth. When.a group of Ontario potters gathered at Beechwood Pottery, R.R.5, Seaforth, on a , recent weekend, they didn't exactly rest on their laurels. , The ,.12 potters attended the working seminar to try working with special clay used in' the salt-firing process; • to learn new techniques of decorating pottery and to hear and watch Wayne Cardinalli, a well-known potter, demoostrate, some of his techniques.- Carditralli, who started his salt-firing technique while living in Providence, lvbssachirsetts, raow has a studio • in . Hastings, Ontario. His salt-fired stoneware pottery is well:. known across the country. and he recently spoke to 600 potters at a seminar held at McMaster University, Hamilton.' ' ' Cardinalli started the recent three day workshop by demonstrating how to build an outdoor salt-fire kiln behind the Beechwood Pottery studio. The kiln was built with a -castable combination of clay and vermiculite, saw- dust, sand, portland cement, a 'quantity of fire bricks and some strenuous manual labour. • Rob Tetu of BeechwoodPottery; said the advantage of,constrircting a kiln this way, is -that it—costs about $500 for material and labor. If the kiln had been built traditionally using more fire bricks, it would have cost betWeen $1,500 and $2,000. Tetu said the same basic technique can be used to build any type of kiln. Building the, kiln from, scratch gave the potters a chance to test the formula in a learning experience, Tetu said. The potters completed the kiln on Friday night and added, the chimney on Saturday. ube Oil & Filter Parts & Labour Included $9.00 Gordis Gulf 527-0333 Seaforth FOUR, .4- TWO CARPET CLEANERS • Mobile Steam Cleaning Plant We clean with an in Truck Steam Cleaner • Call in London 452-3412 or in Seaforth, Res. 527-1382 for free estimate QUALITY MEATS That's Our Specia ty aple Leaf sweet cured ,OTTAGE ROLL Beef & Poll( SAUSAGE Homemade HEA D CHEESE by the piece Sliced CHICKEN LOAF 1 .1 91. 1.59 lb, BEEF PATTIES 1,39m. no filler SIDE OF BEEF 1.291.
