Church, Kippen held a successful
bake sale at Homestead on July 1.
Kippen East. W.I. sponsored a
bus trip to Parkwoed, Oshawa on
June 29 and enjeyed the beautiful
gardens and the home of the Stephen now 'retired founder of General Motors, R. F.
McLaughlin.'
A BEAUTIFUL GARDEN - People who drive past Brucefield on the Mill Road in
the summeroan't help admiring Mary Haugh's hiige flower garden. Mrs,
Haugh, who is.78, has been gardening since,she was five and has more than 1.00
different kinds of iris. She's a member of the SeafortO Lgarden Club and says
people are welcome to stop and look at her flowers.

The Construction Company's
bid to.pave two miles of the road
which is east" of the village of
Hensall, is $48,972.

superintendent Allan Nicholson's
estimated cost of $51,000. Mr.
Nicholson said the .construction
project has to be completed by
September 15.

The service on Sunday at the
Hensall United church was con-
ducted by Rev. Harold Snell with
Richard Fujarczuk at .the organ
and Mrs. Marianne McCaffrey as
choir diregtor. Guest soloist was
Mrs. Marguerite McLeod who
sang, Beside the Green
Pastures." Rev. Snell preached
on being "a citizen of Canada"
reading from Paul's declaration of
citizenship in , He
stressed our country, the involve-
ments of citizenship, democracy
and the greatest privilege of all,
religion. By glorifying God we
become-citizens of heaven.
Next Sunday, the Rev. Ware-
ham of Exeter will be preaching
in Hensall.

Taylor hadn't seen for forty years.

place in Scotland. On Sunday Mr.
and Mrs. Taylor journeyed fo

days with Alistair and family at

about his achievements is from
the Muskoka Free Press.
Robert Ham, 18, of Huntsville
has made a remarkable achieve-
ment for th( second consecutive
year in t Chem 13 News

Research Assistantship Examin-
ation. The exam is sponsored by
the weekly paper out of the
chemistry department at the
University of Waterloo, and
attracts some 6,300 examinees
each year.
Ham, a 'grade 13 student at
Huntsville High School. finished
87th of- those 6,300. Among the
names released by the depart-
ment of cheinktry at Waterloo.
Robert was one - of the few
students in the top 200 who study
at small town high scho61s.
While he received a book-prize
for finishing in the top 200
examinees, Robert fared even
better last year when he finished
25th on the list and was offered as
a prize a -research assistantship at
the University of Toronto in the
Chemical engineering depart-
ment. Ham had to refuse the

because he had no plans to enroll
at U of T.
The amazing factor in Robert's
achievement is that he finished so
successfully despite having
completed his grade 13 chemistry
two years ago while still in grade
11. He studied from his notes and
textbooks but did not have the
day-to-day exposure to the
material that classroom work
provides. -
Head of the chemistry. depart-
ment 'at Huntsville High School,
Don McCormick. describes Ham
as an ideal student. He was the
student in the course, said
MCCOrmick, not only does he
have lots of ability, he is very
conscientious and was prepared
at all Wads.
Fishing was excellent, with
everyone contributing to a good
catch. '

Harvey Hayter op Sunday were
Mr. and Mrs. John :Williams and
sap John of Hanover, and John
Sr.'s mother from England.
Neighbours will remember that
John used to work for Harvey a
number of years ago.

of Sandra Turner. The roll call

placed him in the top I 'A% of the
best chemistry students in the
province each year, will attend
McGill University on a chemical
engineering scholarship next-fall.
He told the Muskoka Free Press
that he chose McGill because he
wants to improve his FrenCh and
the milieu of that' city should
provide him with that opportunity
while studying at one of the finest
institutions in the world.
He plans to spend the summer
as a freelance ,gardener in the
Huntsville area. •

minister of Brucefield and Kippen
United chruches, and 37 years
since he was ordained, Rev. Ted
Stephens is retiring.
Mr. and Mrs. Stephens moved
in last week to their new houie. at
Albright Gardens, the retirement
centre for United Church
ministers near Beamsville.
Mr, Stephens, who stacked in
that area as a young minister,
says he and his wife are "going
honehoe in a sense." The Stephens'
have a number of friends in the
area, and at the retirement
community, which includes about
- 43 houses as well as a senior
citizens home, he's one a three
ministers who once served the
same church.
As well as the chance to be
among friends, the Gardens
offers an easy to'care for home '
that will allow the couple_to_lust
lock Jhe !tense and go", garden
plots, and all kinds of, fruit farms—
near by that will let them fi ll their
freezer. ,
Brucefield ,United Church's
Centennial year in 1976 stands
out, Mr. Stephens says, as the
highlight of his stay here, and one-
highlight _of his_ entire ministry.
Another was Lloydminister
Saskatchewan where a new church
seating 1000, was built during his
time there.
Mr. Stephens, who's 65, says
he'll enjoy his retirement. He
recently came across a retirement
document belonging to his'father,
Also a Minister. He served 47
years, and Mr. Stephens says
"that was about five years too
'' long,

have returned from a trip to
