Climaxing a weekend of
exciting heartbreak and joy the
Texaco - Duffers, after being
bridesmaids for seven year's.
, finally struggled to hold op and
win the league torunament. The
Duffers edged outthe high flying
Turf Club .„in Ihe• "A" division
fmal by a narrow 4-3 count. Both
teams where up for the final and
both played extremely' con-, findently in the field.
The Turf opened the scoring in
the second inning as Ferg
lar's bunt single scored Joe Dick.
Texaco came back in the third as
Singles by Ron Beuerman, Rick
Fortune and Ken Miller pushed
across the tieing run. Texaco
moved in front with a big fifth
inning as 3 singles and a double
followed by a triple by Marc •
Robinet shoVed across 3 big runs
and moved the Duffers into a 4-1
lead.
The Turf narrowed the gap to 2
runs' in the sixth as Jack
Mcliwains single produced a run.
The final inning saw thp Turf pull
off a double play to squash a
Texaco rally. Then with only orie

but he was stranded at third a,'
Ron Beuerman struck out, the

RINyjsion
The "B" division trophy was
taken by the Travellers as they
completely, ^whitewashed Main-
street coastitrg to an 17-8 win.
The Travellers set the, pace
opening a 3-0 first inning lead and
Mainstreet 'never got into the
contest- as the Travellers walked
away With the game. Perry
Broome for ' the Travellers and
Grant Currah for Mainstreet

wheeling contest.
The Travellers where put in the'

The toots or, more correctly, rhizomes are a
good source of Starch. They can be peeled and
boiled like potatoes or peeled, dried and
ground for flour as the Indians used to do.
. The fresh young shoots in the spring cane

Tasting like asparagus, 'it Will probably be a
hit with the whole family.
The Indians used the -cattail as an all
purpose plant. The downy heads were used by
the fllackfeet as a bandage lurid burn
treatment. Many tribes used the 'down for
bedding in the form of pillows and a type of
comforter.. The long leaves were frequently
woven into baskets., mats and partitions.
The beauty of the cattail is that itip easily
recognized by almost everyone, and all parts
are completely safe to eat either in the raw or•
cooked state. "
Ey Steve Cooke
--Everyone knows what the cattail Or Typha
looks like. They keep showing up in flower
arrangements, among other, things. If you
decide to collect a few for a vase at home, now
is the time to do it. Picking the slender shafts
in late'inne or early July ensures tight heads
,and reduces the chances of having cattail fluff
suddenly blowing all over the house.. When
the heads are dry. a light application of hair
spray makes for added insurance, —
There-are a couple of other reasons_ for
checking out the flower heads at this time.
The long spike on the top of the head is the
part which produces the pollen for the plant. If
the pllen (which is bright yellow) has not
appeared yet. there is some mighty fine eating
at hand. The young flowerspikes can be boiled
up and eaten with butter and salt like corn on
the cab, - •
•- If the pollen has formed oh the spike, don't
despair. The pollen itself can be used as a
flour substitute, but it is more •commonly
_ mixed with regular flour to impart a beautiful
golden colour to your baking. Pancakes, bread

out here that we do play some big
