N.U..R.S.H., (Nurses United for
Registration Security 'and
Employment) has grown from its
original membership of 30 since it
was founded in December 1977 to
over 3,000 members Barbara
Dundas, London, co-ordinator,
informed about 20 area nurses
from across Huron County at a
meeting in Seaforth Tuesday
night.
The organization was started in
response to proposals circulated
by the College 'of Nurses of
Ontario to change regulations on
certificates of competence.
All registered nurses and
nursing assistants in the province
would lose their certificates to
practise in Ontario if they did not
work at least 50 days in one year
in a period of five years in
Ontario.
Members of Ny.R.S.E. have
declared they ai,e;, not opposed to
any updating programs for
nurses who have been out of
practice and in fact want these
courses„ but protest the arbitrary
way they would lose their certifi-
cates-
Mrs,-Dundas said, "We would
urge the Council of the College of
Nurses to direct its attention to
encouraging and making
available to the nursing
profession voluntary refresher
courses in every area where they
are needed."
Mrs. Dundas urged that letters
continue to be sent to the
Minister of Health, Premier
William Davis/ and the.local
M.F.P.
She said a copy of a brief
outlining. N.U.R.S.E.'s position
has been presented to Premier
Davis, Minister of Health Dennis'
Timbrell, leaders of the
opposition parties, members of
the pommittee of regulations and
all .M.P.P.
Mrs. Dundas said the College-,
of 'Nurses has appointed a
consultant to study the letters of
protest sent in but she said
members of N.U.R.S.E. were
Concerned how slanted the result
would be of the study oil, the part
of the College of Nurses.
Mrs. Dundas said community
colleges, across Ontario contacted
by N.U.R.S.B, have not been
approached to be ready to provide
for the thousands of ntirses who
