Sister Rita sends report -
' Editor's. NOte: Lewis ,.Coyne of
-
Dublin forwarded' this' letter
describing some of the festivities ..
, celebrating the breakup-ofwinter
in the far north, which his family
' received recently, from his' Sister,
Sister Rita, who serves in
Yellowknife as a teacher. ' •
Dear Lew. and Mary, _
Well since I have last written to
you• many exciting .things in the
North have taken place. SehOol
was out on March 16 and Caribou-
Carnival Week 'was well in
_•• progress, Thii . week is the . Big ,
Event Of •the year. in Yellowknife-.•
One 'Of the main 'features of "the •
week is the "Caribou Cops" who
roam. at large and, have control of
the city for the week. Well on.
Sunday, March - 12,. the. opening
day we took one of our Sisters to.
the airport as she. was going to
Calgary for a convention"; As .we -
• entered the airport we . were
overtaken by these men in black
v , with grey wigs.
None of us ••hed a • Caribou. ,
Button which is a must during.
those • days. To make metters,
. • worse none of us had • any money
with us except. the Sister. going
• away: •so it was. beg, borrow or_..
steal to'pay our fines which were_
dellitc.gaeb.,___Now we are :the
'proud possessors . of an Official
. • green. paper stating our offence.
• At this' time, for three '
there are the Dog Derby races.
• The teams run a 50-milk race for
three days.4 Twenty-five teams
took part..The father of one of my
;pupil's 'came first. Darcy was
quite proud of his team. On
• .
Saturday meriting -a parade of
about 20 floats took place--rather
interesting--rather amusing but it
-1
.• certainly showed a great deal of
time and 'energy spent. "Carrny"
- the Caribou dressed in his fur and
antlers led parade followed by
the YK hand. 'The weather . just
scented io be made to order for
the week. 'We spent a few hours •
down :it the Caribou Fort on Frame
Lake observing the events.
'One event was a curling
• .. bonspiel for the children on an
outdoor rink.' The rocks were
made froin blocks of wood and
decorated by the children. Prizes
were awarded for the best
decorated. This proved to be most
popular. Of course there were the
banquets and dances which we
refr ained from.
Caribou Week. just finished:
When the arctic Winter- Games
began in Hay River. To describe
Yellowknife at this point is best -
summed up by: Feast Before a.
Famine. Immediately after the
carnival everybody' moved to Hay
•River, These games-- include
teams competing from Alaska,
Yukon and across the North We st
Territories. Medals are awarded
at the end. N.Wa. ,came home -
with the Silver medal. Competi-
tion takes place in basketball,
volleyball, badminton, snow
shoeing,. skiing, figure skating as
Well as many other sports.
We ,didn't get there but Sister
Mary' Jo and I went • fOr a plane
ride to Trout Rock, a little
settlement which is now
abandoned. Our pastor had built
the title church there and they are
thinking of moving it to YK. This
can be done by way of the ice
road.
Speaking of ice roads, on
On our way home we 'had to
-stop at certain- intervals to allow
__the hitge_trucks-to pass by. They _
',always travel in convoy--5 in a
group. The first one is fitted_ out
with a snow plow in case of
blizzard.lt is really an education
to .observe how they travel.
Sometimes I feel we southerns
are so sophisticated with all our •
modern conveniences. Yet the
work that is accomplished here is
fantastic. This type of work would
never be thought of down south.
Trowever, I think 'I heard youhad
. need of a snowplow this winter.
The sympathy of the
community is extended to the
relatives of the late John Huras of
Kitchener who died suddenly in a
car accident. HiS .p.aternal grand--
mother is Mrs. William Huras
nee Freda Rose. Mrs. Henry Rose
